Creed and Nickleback, which for all the hate they get, were also better than grunge.

Creed gets a lot of bad press because of their singer, but musically, they were/are some of the best musicians in the world. If you don't believe me, listen to this song.
Alterbridge - Cry A River....but you won't click on it cause you hate creed I know >.>

Here is a song from 1982. Night Ranger – ( Don't Tell Me You Love Me). 35 years ago. Everything about this song is better than anything about 00’s rock or Top 40 rock today. And they’re just an 80s chick rock band in the grand scheme of things.
True - but what most of the 80s hair metal/pop rock bands DID have were players. Take Night Ranger - as you say, nothing particularly special about the band at all.
However, Brad Gillis and Jeff Watson could have played guitar for ANYONE. Fitzgerald is a prodigy and son of a prodigy. Keagy and Blades were adequate players, but mainly they added songwriting and singing.
They had a lot of musical ability for a "chick rock" band - and that was true of many of the commercially successful 80s bands. (Dokken? Forget about it - they were insanely talented, too, just as another example.)

I have nothing against Creed. As a person who plays guitar, I'm also well aware of how good Mark Tremonti is at guitar. A quick look at any of their tabs will tell you that.
Scott Stapp, on the other hand...

Mclusky Do Dallas takes a gigantic dump on mainstream rock in the aughts. Which was a dismal decade for major label rock (nu metal is a musical scourge), but was a pretty great decade on the margins. Not quite as strong as the 80s underground, but still quite strong.
But seriously, Mclusky. That's an f'n rock band.
Though, to be honest, I'd probably vote for the Hold Steady, Drive-by Truckers, or Sleater-Kinney.

That's a lot of text for it just to be summed up as you're old and hate younger generation's music

OP, I had a thought, an hour-and-a-half of spare time, and a six pack of beer. I really am still trying to connect the dots - or any dots - from the 80s to the '00s in terms of mainstream hard rock.
So as I exit your thread let me say these things:
1. My point wasn't to crap in your thread. I can dig some of what Linkin, Rage, and 311 were doing. I was just trying to give some perspective on why I don't understand how Nu Metal became the dominant hard rock genre.
2. Ace-Mid. Oh Lord the '80s guitar players.
All those weekends during the '70s that kids spent in their garages trying to figure out Deep Purple, Sabbath, and Zep riffs really came to fruition. Still occasionally hear 80s pop rock tunes and think - Oh, that's a Lukather solo.
3. Alter Bridge is frickin' legit. Thanks for the reminder.
4. I APOLOGIZE FOR NOTHING!
Edit: splelling.

I personally much prefer Tremonti to Alter Bridge.
