his style is subtle, not flashy. When his rep was built it was in the 60s, before even Hendrix. Now he is damn good, but not the best ever

Subtle is correct and yes he is the best. Certainly the most musically creative. He intentionally lays back in his advanced years due to various injuries which include hearing loss and nerve related disorders.

Clapton is the Greg McElroy of musicians. He was the benificiary of superior talent around him; Baker, Bruce, Allman, Gordon etc. and just had to not frick it up. Basically Clapton peaked with the solo for While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

If "not frick it up" means creating some of the most iconic solos in the history of guitar, and like Keith Richards coming up with long list of instantly recognizable intro riffs, then yea, you are right.

Everything with Clapton's name tied to it that doesn't suck was written by someone else. As far as solos, the only one worth a damn is the the aforementioned While My Guitar Gently Weeps. The rest are easily forgettable sans amaybe White Room.

No doubt.

I never understood the praise for Clapton. I enjoyed some of his work, he's got a smooth style at times. But, I think he thrived off his rep from Cream, and he wasn't even the driving force in that band.

I watched a documentary about him, thinking "Now I'll finally learn why people think he's great." It was just the opposite. I ended up feeling sorry for him.

The guy hung around recording studios looking for people to play with, and people accepted him because of his "Cream" credentials. He joined bands, and they went downhill afterwards.

He was tutored by some of the best musicians out there: Duane Allman, George Harrison, Steven Stills, and the best he came up with was Layla and a Bob Marley remake?

I've heard many better musicians in bars than Eric Clapton. He's got a cult following that can't fathom that he's an average musician.

I have been preaching exactly that for years. I probably start a topic regarding this once every couple of years only to be told how dumb I am. Dude was talented player no doubt, but shite, talented guitar players are a dime a dozen.

Which from what I gather Duane wrote the badass intro lick, Gordon wrote the piano outro, and Clapton was responsible for the shitastick verse.

Much of what people do nowadays sprung from his inventiveness.

Nobody´s made mention of his nickname, I won´t, look it up. It´s due to taste, buildup and layering.

Is that Clapton playing guitar in the out-portion of that song?

Someone told me it wasn't Clapton playing that, so I don't know. Either way, it's awful guitar work.

There are six guitar tracks on Layla, one with Clapton playing rhythm, three with Clapton harmonizing with the main riff, one of Allman playing bottleneck, and one of Clapton and Allman soloing together.

OK then. That explains his enormously successful Crossroads Festival that brings musicians from every discipline and genre to participate due to his personal invitation. And all for charity. If you watch these shows on DVD or other, his fellow musicians to a person say that if Eric calls you come. Out of respect for him as a musician and a person.

It is not a cult. He is respected worldwide.

Only a top 10 album of all time. But that was certainly his zenith. He hated the whole guitar God thing because he fancied himself a blues purist. There are two possibilities when you reach the artistic heights of Layla. You keep on burning the candle like that and you die, or you get straight and become really frickin milquetoast. He's probably pretty happy to be alive, but yeah, his music definitely got boring. Any edge he ever had has been blunted by time, sobriety, and bad advice from stylists. The journeyman period was particularly lame. At the end of the day, he's an upper-middle class white kid from Surrey. His blues will never really be authentic, but he plays it honestly I guess.

I would encourage anyone here who believes that Clapton is a mediocre talent, to find the Austin City Limits tribute to SRV. At the end of the show, Clapton, King, Bonnie Raitt, Neil Schon, Jimmy Vaughn, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray all joined in for an All Star jam to end the show. Guys, Eric Clapton absolutely fricking melted every guitar player on that stage (with the exception of Schon) and it wasn't even close.

As a guitar player, I can hear things being played and understand the technical difficulty of it. That was the night I became fully aware of the mans ability to play.
