Some artists can record an hour's worth of fart sounds and there will be critics and loyal fans who will acclaim it as spectacular. Radiohead is one of them.

On Phish's DVD Bittersweet Motel Trey reads a review that says something along the lines of, "They could piss off the stage into the ears of their fans and they would call it gold"
Something like that.
FTR I don't care too much for the Beatles. I would definitely not scream and shout if I saw them. I'm not sure I'd even go up to Sir Paul if I saw him on a street corner.

Lou Reed put this theory to the test with Metal Machine Music. Of course, there were critics who praised it (including Lester Bangs - though I'm never sure when he was being serious).

I don't know if I'm more puzzled by this thread or the fact that A LOT of people agree with the OP.
Eric Clapton is one of the greatest guitarists to ever walk the face of the earth. He could play blues in a classical sense, blues-rock, rock, acid-rock and all the pop bullshite that the OP presumably loves.
And to give Duane full credit for Layla is absolutely ignorant and idiotic. Clapton wrote the whole album (minus the covers) while in the depths of depression, heartbreak and drug addiction. Yes, Duane added some very nice licks to the album and to the title track, but it's more of a Clapton album than anything. Duane was only on 4 tracks in the album I believe.
Just some examples of why Clapton isn't anything less than spectacular:
The Yardbirds - Five Long Years
John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers - Hideaway
Cream - Sitting on Top of the World (Live)
Derek and the Dominoes - Keep on Growing

I don't think anyone is saying he's a shite guitarist or anything. Just that his music is not suitable to all palettes.

And Bell Bottom Blues--to ME anyway, this is the type of thing that makes Clapton great. I can see it's not for everybody, but we all like artists that others don't.

3. My buddy, who works for a major record label and is a die-hard Redskins fan, compared the Grammy's to the Dan Snyder era Redskins. This came after I sent him an email that said "Wow, the grammy nominations this year aren't that terrible".

Dude, this is weird. I literally made this exact same analogy yesterday in a discussion about Radiohead on somebody's FB wall. I will copy my exact post below.

People are talking like it's the greatest album ever made, but Im beginning to think that radiohead could record 74 minutes of armpit farts and they would say the same thing. When I hear this album, I hear somethng that isn't terrible, but isn't something that I feel like I must listen to again. And for that reason, this isn't a good album. " If I were critic, I'd write that. because a ot of people would read it adn think "finally somebody is saying how I've always felt about this band. Somebody finally knocked them off this 400 story pedestal. Bout time."
