Eric Clapton - poor songwriter, boring tunes, average singer.

Didn't Rolling Stone once describe him as a minor talent posing as a major star?

Okay, let's crunch the numbers on Eric Clapton:

The only 3-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist, and separately as a member of The Yardbirds and Cream.

Ranked 2nd on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time

Ranked 4th on Gibson's Top 50 Guitarists of All Time.

17-time Grammy Award winner.

Often referred to as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time.

Yeah, poor, boring and average.

I agree, find nothing he does very interesting...

Edit: though that can be said about the white man blues in general...

I'm with you. His only good song was Layla, and that was because Duane made that song. The only guitar work of his I dug was his playing on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"

I would be hard pressed to think of a more overrated artist.

I like Layla, but even then I like the middle part the best.

Me too. They stayed way too high on the frets for way too long imo.

Yeah. Most of the guitar was done by Duane Allman, though. He wrote the main lick. Played all the sweet slide stuff. All Clapton did was get all butthurt cause he wanted George Harrison's old lady and write some whiny arse lyrics.

It's an invitation to add your own "just don't get it" artist... e.g. the Grateful Dead.

As for Clapton, I'm not qualified to judge his guitar-playing, but his songs are not very good. As for his popularity, I'll remind that Debbie Boone's "You Light Up My Life" is one of the biggest commercial successes of all time.

maybe add that to the OP.

as far as clapton goes, i enjoy his guitar skills. i enjoy his voice. i enjoy his songs. he's not an artist that i will put on their entire discography and listen from start to finish, but i like the music he makes.

i don't get the obsession with taylor swift. or niki minaj. or justin beiber. or pretty much 85% of modern pop music.
