I find it odd that Christian music is categorized by lyrics, not music

Nothing against it, but music is generally categorized by musical style or type, not subject matter of the lyrics.

I was just in a restaurant and they had a Christian station playing. The songs were all over the place, country, rock, pop, R&B, except the lyrics were all Christian.

As a fan of music, this seems weird.

As a fan of black metal..

Burzum and Gorgoroth are two different bands but fall under the same category.

Christian music is about the message. Its basically all talking about the same thing.

Because it's about the message, and not the packaging?
That is what Christianity is all about.
I'm not a Bible thumper and don't even go along with all of the accepted translations, but anyway that you can get a good message across is a great thing. LINK

I like this one by Matthew West.

I understand that. The point is that is opposite of how all other music is categorized.

If I hate country music, I’m not going to all the sudden like it because of the lyrics.

That is the message of it. Getting that boat anchor that some of us tied ourselves to, off from around our neck and fly. Who knows what you might find?

Another thing is, it's not commercially feasible, to have a different radio station, for each type of Christian music.

Indie music is characterized by what type of record contract the band has. That's even odder to me.

They do, if you live around a big population area. Talking about regular radio here. The Christians stations in small population areas, do it differently. The County where I presently live, only has about 12,000 people. There are small mountains all around, Radio reception aint great.

Which keys, notes, chords, and rhythms are "Christian" and which aren't? Instrumental music has no ideology, it's universal. I can't conceive not getting that.

Part of that is the bands themselves. There are some that will always be the same, like Steven Curtis Chapman.

But look back at the Christian rock hey day. You had bands like DC Talk that were really just making records that mirrored the popular music at the time. You'd have to re-categorize them with every record.

It's consumer driven. Move like movie or book classification in this case.

If you like a certain style of movie cinematography, style of acting, a book that is more about character development, or a book that reads more like its the work of a storyteller, you probably have to dig a little deeper than the "drama" category for a movie or "it's a dystopian story" for a book.

So people look for christian artist then delve into the music styles.

The radio stations almost have to play all these types of music because, while the industry as a whole is pretty healthy, no real subcategories would generate enough interest to financially sustain a station in the places they tend to exist. so they're basically Christian pop stations with a smattering of soulful gospel stations and the occasional bluegrass/traditional gospel stations.

The audience for it is listening for the message not the music. Not to mention the significant portion that will only listen to "proper Christian" lyrics made by "proper Christian" artists. If it's ambiguous at all, these people will get confused and angry.
