Ok, after careful deliberation, I call this their 2nd best album out of the 4 and that is only because there are fewer tracks (but just the same in time). I have to keep You'd Prefer an Astronaut at 1 just because "Stars" and "I'd Like Your Hair Long" have still never been replicated. This album is absolutely bad arse. The weakest track might be either "Cloud City" or "Step into You". These songs are so well produced. You hear so much more from a present day HUM. These guys and Failure, both, took a ton of time off and came back just as strong. HUM just gets it. They always did.
*All 4 albums are damn strong.
Elektra 2000...3.75 stars
You'd Prefer...4.50 stars
Downward is Heavenward...4 stars
Inlet...4.25 stars

I tried listening to this album but it was a little too hipster for my taste. It had one or two decent songs but not something I would revisit.

This album is really good. AOTY contender.

Haha ok, I’ve been riding on this album the last few days and I fricking love it, it’s HUM, no doubt. I was just going to post here to see what’s everyone’s favorite song so far and Step Into You is actually my favorite right now.
Reason being is it stands out from the rest of the album. At first when I heard the first riff I was like ouch that doesn’t fit, but now I think the vocals fit on that song better than any other. It’s different and has an 80s, early 90s sound to it. Idk man, right now I can’t get enough of that song.

Oh wow thanks I’ll definitely give it a go

I think Waves is still my favorite. Gives off some heavy Only Shallow vibes.

I’ve got In The Den, The Summoning, Shapefifter as my top three, but I love the whole thing really. I’m having a hard time picking a favorite song.

I think I’d go Waves, In the Den, and Shapefifter as my top three, but they are all really good. Only complaint I could have for the album is that the songs are all somewhat similar sounding, but it’s such a great sound I don’t blame them.

thank you for mentioning this. would have never caught it otherwise. one song in, this feels like the same band.. not like the pixies trying to emulate the Pixies

For all of 2020’s shortcomings, it has been a really strong music year. There have been at least 30 albums I’ve enjoyed to some degree. But after spending some more time with this one, I feel comfortable saying it is my favorite album of the year at the halfway point. It’s just a great record. Not even close to a weak spot in its eight tracks. The 55 minute runtime breezes by, feels like 30 minutes.
Possibly some recency bias here, but damn, I just really like this album.

I've been listening to this album whilst driving across Dallas and as heavy as the album is, it relaxes me and makes traffic inconsequential.

Hum and Failure are two bands that really know how to tastefully incorporate synth into rock music.
My 2 favorite bands of all time
Also thanks to everyone for this thread. My lack of social media means I somehow forgot this was happening. Listening now.

In the den is my favorite. Album is badass. Shame I never gave this band a chance in the 90's, though I did like Stars.

Step Into You is my fav song of 2020. With this album release perhaps finally, after so many years, my screen name will make sense to everyone.

I just had time to digest this album.
This has to be the best surprise of 2020

I have finally listened to their 90's albums, and this one is better for sure.
