How much do you pay attention to the lyrics in music and how important are they to you?

Some people live and die by the lyrics, some hear the voice and treat it as an instrument only hearing a couple of words or phrases.

Myself, I don't really care about the lyrics. Sure I hear some words and phrases, but I have trouble hearing or understanding what the singer is saying most of the time anyway. The sound, beat, and melodies are what I hear and get out of music. The singers voice is just another instrument and piece of the entire puzzle.

I'm not infatuated with the meaning of every song I hear.

Thoughts?

The meaning can be interpreted different ways. I do like to see / know lyrics. I think it really can add to the song, especially when they MEAN something. Not just rhyming phrases.

I need to like the sound of the music first. Then if the lyrics are great, that makes the song even more meaningful to me.

A good one for example would be:

Audioslave - I Am The Highway

the problem with me is that I can understand the words most of the time during the song.

I really just care about the entire sound of the thing.

I hear you. Sometimes its hard to make out what they are saying, unless you look up lyrics. Some singers though can get their point across in certain songs where its not needed. Makes its more powerful IMO. But I think I'm in the boat of I like the sound better than lyrics in most cases.

A great example is Radiohead.

One of my favorite bands of all time, I don't what the frick York is ever saying in any song. I just enjoy the sound of the whole thing.

Pretty situational for me. Some artists are great for sound with lackluster lyrics. Others are poets with weak music. I try to judge accordingly.

Good example. Yeah some of the time, the artist will admit the lyrics are gibberish and don't even know what it means. Just goes along with the melodies and music.

I actually used to prefer instrumentals and listened to mainly older jazz. As life goes one, the use of "language" has become more important to the music I like. In many cases it was the story telling that began as the premise for music, which was merely a simple accompaniment to the 'story" ...and much less important. Now the broad palettes of sounds and textures used in modern music production can create a place that a listener may escape to just as vivid and powerful as the "stories" could be.

Continuing with a Cornell theme. "Birth Ritual" from Singles Soundtrack. I can only make out the word "ritual" for the entire song. But it is still awesome. The sound of the music draws you in and Cornells voice. He could be singing in Portuguese, and its still awesome.

For me it is 50/50. I need to know some of the lyrics to make a song stick with me.

Bob Dylan and John Prine can be other examples. Their vocals are NOT great. But you can understand the words and the songs are incredible.

On the first listen, lyrics typically take a back seat to rhythms and melodies and a catchy chorus. However, lyrics are what keep me coming back, what keeps some songs (especially ones that are not all that complicated or original from a musical standpoint) from staying relevant, in my opinion. A great example is "A Little Bit of Everything" by Dawes. The melody is simple, chord changes are nothing remarkable, but the lyrics are incredibly powerful. That's why that song comes to mind rather than the hundreds of songs that likely use the same chord progression.

Lyrics are incredibly important, but it's part of a whole. Great lyrics to shitty song suck; whereas, shitty lyrics to a great song will still be good.

To me, great lyrics put great songs over the top.

I feelings are exactly the same. I can hear every bit of music in great detail, but often times, lyrics are a bit tough to understand.

As an experiment I tried to understand Reznor this weekend by listening to a couple of NIN albums.

Impossible for me to decipher what he is saying.

Its all about the overall sound to me.

Lyrics are those annoying things that interrupt the guitar solos. I keed, I keed.

Like others said, it depends on the artist/band.
