Holy shite moment -- "Hot Rats"

When I was growing up I had a buddy who was very into Frank Zappa (and plenty of other weird music). This was late 80's to early 90's when he would play this shite for me and, it was just so damn weird, I made unrelenting fun of him for liking that bullshite.
Here we are 25 years later and, after stumbling across a Zappa interview on youtube, decided to give him another chance. I used the google and it said for jazz and rock fans, the first album to check out is "Hot Rats". So I did...
Holy shite. This album is incredible. It truly is a perfect fusion of jazz and bluesy rock guitar jams. If you're into prog rock, jam bands, New Orleans jazz, heavy instrumental albums, you've got to give this a spin or 3.

It’s the first album I ever heard by him and I was also blown away. Peaches En Regalia is such a good song.
Sadly, I haven’t given much of the rest of his catalogue a listen. It’s a bit overwhelming because of the size of his work. Any Zappa fans know what to listen to next if I like Hot Rats?

Do yourself a favor and buy Joes Garage and You are what you is. Both of these are timeless classics and both are funny as hell. I have never been a fan of his guitar playing, but his band, his songs, his humor and his arrangements make up for his bizarre mindless noodling/shredding. Call me dumb all over..........and a little ugly on the side.

Roxy & Elsewhere
Zoot Allures
Sheik Yerbouti
As you said, it's a big list.

Good is a massive understatement.

That's about the crux of the biscuit.

If you like those I would check out Burnt Weenie Sandwich, The Grand Wazoo and Uncle Meat.

One of my best friends is a HUGE Zappa fan. This guy was a bigtime live music collector as well back in the days of tape swaps via rec.music.gdead and rec.music.phish, etree, etc.. (I'm probably speaking Greek to most of you). He'd get obsessed with a band or artist and just collect everything he possibly could on them from studio to live to rare outtakes. He did it with the Dead and Phish and other jambands obviously, but also with Dylan, Zappa, etc..
Anyway, we all loved and listened to a lot of Zappa... but then my friend went down the Captain Beefheart wormhole, and that was somewhere we just couldn't follow.

Hot Rats is a masterpiece.
Gumbo Variations might be my favorite jam of all time.
