His solution is stupid, but I do like the general attitude behind it. Stop being afraid of noise. Music is neutered and safe right now, but that's hardly the blogs' fault.

I agree to a certain point, but this guy sounds like your average jaded music lover (like myself). I'm 36 years old and I have mostly done shite my way. I never really followed other people's tastes in Music. I listened to hard core Electronic (Techno) music in the late 80s / early 90s and the kids looked at me as being a weirdo...now these same assholes listen to nothing but top40 "electronic dance music" and think Dubstep is the best thing since sliced bread.
(My point here is: I didn't give a shite what other people liked musically)
My advice to this guy and everyone else is: do your own thing; make your own path. Don't let a blog or a fad dictate your lifestyle. Be original and like what you like.

I think the biggest issue is the definition of "rock". The Lumineers, decent band, not fricking rock. Mumford? Yawn.

I definitely get what hes saying. He is right that Pitchfork et al have way too much tastemaking power. And that much "good" music is more concerned with being clever and "deep" than anything else
Saw Japandroids/Cloud Nothings show last week. Been a very long time since I went to a rock show like that. Small venue, great atmosphere. Perfect show for howling at the moon. Just reaffirmed why I love rock music.
But why doesnt he give us a list of his albums of the year instead of bitching about someone else's? It just comes off as a "Kids these days...."

Is it good music? Absolutely.
It's just hardly what I and many others view as rock. The times they are a changing and pop culture reflects that.

The threats to popular music are rap and trance/industrial/EDM/whatever it's called this week, not blogs and hipsters with banjos

But yea, rap for the last 5-10 years has been atrocious

My problem with blaming blogs is that early indie was heavily reliant on word-of-mouth, and we called it zines back in the day, which were really just blogs with crappy distribution. Pitchfork isn't a blog, they are the new Rolling Stone. Who gives a shite what they have to say? Do your own thing, and don't worry what old fogeys like me have to say.

there are a lot of popular "indie" bands these days that are afraid to rock... they don't have a punk rock background.
