Guitar players: F major barre chord

Do any of you have no problem with barre chords except this one? Honestly, I still cheat by using my thumb to press the low E and simply let the high e ring out. For what ever reason, that barre chord is so much more difficult than any other.

It's a tough one for beginner guitarists, but you have to keep practicing it. It's a huge barrier to get through and it takes a lot of time, it doesn't just happen. Keep it at-day after day, week after week, month after month. It's not supposed to be easy.

Go practice a G13 on the 3rd fret, you'll be begging for that F major.
I do remember F and B being the hardest chords to finagle but keep practicing and it'll start ringing out.

Put a capo on the 1st fret and play the song in E? It is a pretty tough chord though. It's harder to press those notes near the nut all the way down. Add to that the fact that they also tend to be sharp in pitch. Stick with it and try to learn to keep your thumb on the back of the neck instead of "cheating" with it.

Everyone complains about F-maj when they're starting, but practice will make you forget why you ever thought it was hard. Try rolling your index finger toward the nut and experiment with its position sideways across the fretboard. Remember the index only has three strings to press. Get your thumb in the middle of the neck where it can do you some good.

Guys, thanks for the advice. I do all the thing you all mentioned, but I have been playing for years. I just began getting serious again about 3 years ago. The Fmaj barre has always been my enemy. I can do it, but it is simply the hardest chord to always play correctly. It is mostly the timing...and the fact that I cheated for a long time...and now it is hard to stop cheating!

Practice, practice, practice....find a song that goes back and forth between the F and a couple other chords.....for me it was 51st State of America by New Model Army. LINK...I also think I was pressing too hard with the barre finger when I was learning. It really doesn't take much force but you have to find the sweet spot on your finger.

It's more difficult because in the traditional barring hand position, the tip of the pointer finger has the least amount of strength to push down on the string, and the low E at the first fret has the highest amount of tension pushing up. So it's more difficult to keep a clean sound.
Nothing wrong with using the thumb for the low E and having the wrist up. It usually sounds better than the traditional barre for me and it's easier on your joints. I actually use that hand position for barring major chords until about fret 7 or 8 (B major or C major) a lot of the time.
If it was good enough for Hendrix, it's good enough for me.

Yea, I use the thumb on some chords...Dadd9 is the one I use it the most on.....basically a D shape with the thumb on the f# note on the low E.

I'm not trying to sound pompous, but I don't remember ever really having any trouble. That said, over the last few years I've evolved into a "thumb over" style on all my E shape bar chords. It wasn't a conscious decision, it just happened when I started messing around with Hendrix style rhythm playing. Nothing wrong with it. Whatever works for you.

I watched a video where Andy Summers gave a demonstration on how to play that song. It'd been a while since he'd played it and even he struggled with it at first.

I agree with the poster who said practice. It may require strengthening the muscles in your hand, and getting more used to the finger positioning.
It could also be a problem with the guitar. Have you tried playing the chord on other guitars?

The better the guitar the easier it is to play barre chords for me. I always try to play an open F instead of the barre chord. I need to get out of that habit I guess.
