Neil Peart was Rush's lyricist, and while Rush is my favorite band, I wouldn't describe Neil's words as poetic. His themes were in-your-face and I would say he lacked poetry in his words. Tom Sawyer has great lyrics but the words originated from lyricist Pye Dubois, who made the wise choice to let Rush develop and record the song.

Jamie's Cryin' was ahead of its time. Almost like Pearl Jam lyrics.

But the struggle in his voice makes it art.

...true; however the query was 'Greatest Rock Poet Lyricist?' Which is really exploring for someone because of their word and less about performed delivery. Who might even be like a Bernie Taupin, who wasn't nearly regarded a performer, but was highly lauded for what others sang. The two parts might exist as one much like Ali was boxer and poet, who could have made it famous for just either one.

Not that Bernie fit the bill for GOAT-RPL. It's true the rhyme and meter of uttered delivery does matter; however Dylan's nasal'ed yodel was just another part of what he wanted us to see, and while truly not much of a voice to ask for, the poetry of word still remained despite the instrument, the 'lectronics, or garbled drawl.

Sir Raymond Douglas Davies

Read the lyrics from '20th Century Man' or 'Waterloo Sunset' and many others. Brilliant.

So blow, blow Seminole wind,
Blow like you're never gonna blow again.
I'm calling to you like a long lost friend,
But I know who you are.
And blow, blow from the Okeechobee,
All the way up to Micanopy.
Blow across the home of the Seminole,
The alligators and the garr.

Good Friends and Bottle of Pills

Pantera

I fricked your girlfriend last night.
While you snored and drooled, I fricked your love.
She called me Daddy. And I called her baby when I
Smacked her arse. I called her sugar when I ate
Her alive till daylight. And I slept with her all
Over me, from forehead to ribcage I'd ripper her arse.
Sometimes I thought you might be spying, living out some
Brash fantasy, but no. You were knocked out. But we were
All knocked out you know. In a way

I serve too many masters.

We didn't know you'd break the bottle that the magic
Came in to use those jagged shards to slit our wrists
And neck. And you'd do it too, you're that kind of dude.
But you wouldn't know what you were doing because
I didn't, your girlfriend could have been a burn
Victim, an amputee, a dead body. But god damn I wanted
To frick.

I'm serving too many fricking masters.
[I told you. I told you motherfricker]

Jeff Tweedy is the most poetic lyricist currently IMO.

Well, Neil Peart was the lyricist for Rush during their successful years....

Leaving out Roger Waters is criminal. As much of a complete and total piece of shite as he is, Some of his lyrics are among the greatest ever written.

Waters is fantastic. It's way overboard to call him a piece of shite, though.

I don't need a pickle....

Catchy, funny, but one of the dumbest damn songs ever written.

For the most part, once he found some words that sounded nice strung together, Jon was happy and stopped.

Factoid: Joss Whedon got the name of his company "Mutant Enemy" from that song you quoted, "And You And I."

Everyone has at least 1 "WTF" song they've written so I'll give Arlo a pass for this one
