I watched the rocking the cradle egypt 78 dvd today. All the songs are from 9/16/78. Just as disappointing as the first time i watched and/or listened to the shows. In the shadows of the pyramids and the energy is just lacking. The shows when they get back to the states are amazing, but these shows are just so average. Crazy.

I was listening to an interview on Letterman with Garcia and Weir about not playing with much energy at he pyramids. Just one of those things I guess. Sometimes the musical energy is there, sometimes it isn't...even in Egypt.

Just got three books in the mail today.
Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics, as well as Billy (Deal) and Phil's (Search for Sound) books.

Search for Sound is great. I'm about halfway through Deal and I'm enjoying it. It's interesting to compare the two perspectives.

Ive been watching this second set with Branford from 3/29/90 YouTube. This shite is amazing. The sax sounds like its always been there. Its seriously moving.

And we just came out of Drums back to Dark Star. Too fricking good.

Eagerly anticipating Love Light to end the 2nd Set. That songs been speaking to me lately. I (admittedly morbidly) watched the video of Bruce Hampton collapsing at the his birthday concert to Love Light being belted by Susan Tedeschi. What a way to go. Purchased the documentary "Basically Frightened" about him as well. I highly recommend it for anyone who hasnt seen it. You can rent it, or buy it. I bought it for $11.99 on Vimeo and it was well worth it. Ill rewatch it a few times.

Yeah, it was sad to Susan kill another musician like she did with a jamming Derek.

RIP BRUCE

Billy played with one arm
They were high as frick on hashish
Keith's piano was way out of tune
clearly they were also pretty intimidated by the moment
the shows also weren't recorded worth a shite

when they got back, they finished shakedown street and then tried to prepare those shows for release as a live album but quickly realized they were not good enough. I do watch the movie occasionally but hardly ever listen to the actual shows.

quote:

Writing in The Music Box, John Metzger said, "So, why is it that with all of the music that the Grateful Dead has dispensed, it took until 2011 for the band to issue its performance at the Denver Coliseum on November 21, 1973? Beautifully presented along with a handful of selections from the show that was held on the previous night, Road Trips, Vol. 4, No. 3: Denver '73 is, to put it quite bluntly, the best release that the Grateful Dead has issued in a long time.... Good fortune undeniably was smiling upon the audience... Not only did the band deliver a musical performance that was rock-solid, but it also assembled a well-paced show that peaked in all of the right places. Much as the cover art... suggests, the Grateful Dead galloped across the Wild West with guns a-blazin' as it painted images of outlaws on the run from life and love."

Saw all five nights. Jerry was having a blast that night. I was in the old moat that used to surround the floor at the Garden for that show. Remember it like it were yesterday.
