today's choice

oct 21- 22, 1978 winterland, SF

these are the first shows after the trip to egypt to play in front of the pyramids, which only a few hundred were lucky enough to see. part of a five-night run to celebrate their return

Disc 1: October 21, 1978;

Sugaree
Passenger
Stagger Lee
I Need A Miracle
Got My Mojo Working >
The Other One >
Stella Blue >
Sugar Magnolia
US Blues

Disc 2: October 22, 1978;

Ollin Arageed>
Deal
Peggy-O
Jack Straw
Scarlet Begonias >
Fire On The Mountain
Not Fade Away >
Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad

disc 1 features a definitive version of "the other one" in its late 70's arrangement, and to many the very best "stella blue" ever performed. "olin arageed" on disc 2 features hamza el din on percussion & vocals leading to an amazing transition into deal. john cippolina (quicksilver messenger service) and lee oskar (WAR) also guest on a few tunes

1978 is underrated, here's a good example of how amazing it could be

Gonna rewind a bit to the beginning of 1978, specifically 1-22-78 McArthur Court - Eugene, OR.
This show became very desirable amongst tape collectors because of Jerry's solo rendition of Space > Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Acoustics inside "The Pit" were truly unique since it was shaped like a square box with tall cathedral-like cielings(see pic below). Such a solid show as Charlie Miller's re-master takes it to a whole new level compared to the old Maxell UDXL II's I wore out.

For those of us who are approaching a half-century, you probably remember CEOTTK. For those younger millennials who are lost in space, literally , it was a 1977 science-fiction movie by Steven Spielberg about a guy (Richard Dreyfuss) whose life changes after his encounter with a UFO and aliens.

1-22-78 SBD re-master

1st
Minglewood
Dire Wolf
Cassidy
Peggy-O

Little bit of Kellers Grateful Grass/Gospel for my Saturday morning. Seeing him tonight here in Steamboat. Wish it was Grateful Grass but hope he plays a Dead song or two anyways.

I always enjoyed Grateful Grass, but Grateful Gospel at Lockn a few years ago was great. Started at around 9 or 10 iirc and brought out a couple big ladies from Preservation ATL sing backups. They did an awesome Samson & Delilah to start off the final day of Lockn.

That's probably the video I just finished: LINK

I saw Grateful Grass with The Stringdusters in Denver. Enjoyed the hell outta it. I would love to see a Grateful Gospel.

Keller last night was absolutely mint. He used to live here in Steamboat back in 90s as a ski bum so he put on a hell of a show at a super small and intimate venue.

Hit us with a Bird Song that was pretty great. Then much to my happiness, he worked in Deep Ellem Blues in the second set.

He also has a song that was about skiing powder in Steamboat with shout outs to runs on the mountain. That...was awesome. Had to scour Keller shows from the past to find the song. "Real Thing is the Deepness"

3-29-90 Nassau Coliseum, Dark Star with Branford on the sax. Holy shite. Holy shite. Only halfway through and this thing is a fcking ride.

Gonna make a point to check out the shows with Marsalis.

3.29.90 is a classic show. Marsalis was really the only one who could pull off horns with the Dead. The '73 Horn Tour is pretty meh.

Need to download the whole show off Spotify so I can listen to it at work. I need my golf course to install wifi course-wide so I can stream from the archive or other sources while I work.

Ended up on a interview with Marsalis yesterday on YouTube. It was very interesting to hear his perspective on the band. Sounded like him and Jerry really had some nice musical moments on stage. He said Jerry didn't smile too much on stage while he was with them, but he'd slide him a nice smirk when they hooked up on a line and made something work.

that's one for the ages for sure.

someone on youtube there is a great interview with Branford about that night. They reached out to him. He didn't know anything about their music. Just jumped onstage and jammed. He and Jerry swapped licks like he'd been in the band for 20 years. never missed a note.
