I read an old Rolling Stone piece on him where the writer called him one of the last guitar gods. Personally, I think the dude is awesome and I can totally go down the youtube rabbit hole watching his live videos.
I'm wondering, though, if this guy is kinda right. Admittedly, I'm older, in my late 50's, so all of my guitar influences are up there, a couple are dead, too, sadly, so I am not really exposed to some of the younger players. I do think guys like Christone Kingfish Ingram, and Marcus King are really good, Doyal Bramhall II, Eric Gale... I still don't see any Eddie Van Halens or David Gilmours, Jimmy Pages or Ace Frehelys...
Anyone? Bueller?

That is because the music has changed from the hard rock blues driven guitar of the seventies. Bands like Radiohead and Arcade Fire don't focus on the "guitar god." Still have Jack White and J. Mascis though.

I have seen him open tours at the Fillmore in Miami Beach twice. He is elite. I’m hoping he’s paving the way for new talent because he kind of is alone in his lane.

Guitar Gods will always be around, maybe just not as popular as they were in the past. A lot of people who listen to music with guitars now are into shoegaze/lofi/noise/spacey type stuff. Also, there are a bunch of modern guitarists who utilize alot of tapping and geometry. Ex: Ichika Nito, Yvette Young, Polyphia.
Ultimately, Supply & Demand rules everything and preferences can change. It will be interesting to see if any rock bands will be able to sell out stadiums once the current legends hang it up.

Gary Clark is not an especially technically gifted guitar player. He plays tastefully, with lots of feeling, usually over simple derivative progressions with a nice groove to it. It ain’t broke, don’t fix it. He puts out some excellent old school blues rock, but to act like he’s some kind of “god” tier player is just too much.
There’s a lot of insanely great guitarists playing metal right now. Rock n roll just isn’t mainstream music anymore. Mainstream rock/pop is no longer guitar driven, and that which is is rarely very “shreddy”. As such, there’s no media made guitar “rock stars” anymore, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t just insane shredders all over the place.
Check out bands like Polyphia, Coheed & Cambria, Dragon Force, the L.A. Maybe, Protest the Hero, Avenged Sevenfold, etc.

Agreed for studio stuff, but live he's a different animal. He is nowhere near as tame as he is in studio. Maybe not on a god tier, but pretty damn close.

You didnt mention Frusciante. He absolutely belongs in the discussion of living guitar God's still performing.
So does Adam Jones.
As for other great performing guys you can check out (not all legends, but all amazing performers):
Davy Knowles
Andrew Stockdale
Jake Kiszka - Greta Van Fleet
Tab Benoit
Joe Bonamassa
Brian Elwin Haner Jr - Avenged Sevenfold
Herman Li - Dragon Force
Sam Totman - Dragon Force
Zakk Wylde - Ozzy/ BLS
Brandon “Taz” Niederauer

I saw Gary live in New Orleans last year. He puts on a good show, but I can tell he's not doing anything particularly complicated (he's a heck of a lot better than me, but I, admittedly, suck at guitar ). I have seen Clapton, Yngwie, Paul Gilbert, etc and Gary is like a couple steps above Chris Leblanc as far as the difficulty of what he's playing. I would put Gary below guys like Sonny Landreth and Kenny Neal. Probably more on par with Anders Osborne.
Granted, not one of the guitarists I mentioned suck. They all put on great performances. I can just recognize technique verses tastefulness, and while Gary is a very tasteful and emotive guitar player, he's just an above average technical player. Which is fine, because you don't have to be a God to make awesome sounding music, and most of the best technical guitarists tend to make really dumb and inaccessible music because they're so consumed by asking if they could that they never stop to wonder if they should. Gary only plays the notes he should, which makes him an excellent artist, but he's an overrated instrumentalist.

Yes.

He's very talented.
I like a few of his songs, but in the grand scheme of guitar driven music, he's kinda boring when it comes to songwriting.

This is laughable. I love anders and he is a WAY better songwriter than gcjr, but gcjr shits all over anders guitar playing abilities.
They arent even in the same stratosphere.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could all be winners by watching them duke it out in an old fashioned guitar duel?

You know, I think what I'm referring to with the "guitar god" term is a player that makes a kid want to pick up the guitar and play, the player on a poster in some kids's bedroom.

Have always respected Gary Clark Jr. incredible talent and performer. His thoughts on how much Prince influenced him are pretty cool to see as well. Here is what he said about who he thought was the best guitarist.
Austin-bred soul-rock guitarist Gary Clark Jr.
knows exactly who set the bar for epic guitar
slaying and true artistry: Prince.
"He's the best, the pinnacle. When I think about true
artists and expression, unapologetic and free,
Prince is that to me," the GRAMMY winner told us
backstage at "Let's Go Crazy: The GRAMMY
Salute To Prince.
"As a guitar player, I think he's the best guitar player
in the world. I don't think anybody could touch him,
and I'll fight you on that. It's just what I want to be,
really," the "This Land" singer adds with a smile

I used to go see him play around BR in the 1980's. He's one of the best guitar players I've ever seen, but he's 65.

You mean like this one I had on my wall?
I had a cool one of Pete Townshend, too.
