hipster folk rock and acoustic pop really aren't my genres. I like funk, classic hard rock, brass bands, electric blues, and a little harder new rock (Foo Fighters, Alter Bridge, Rise Against, ect).
There aren't many bands like this in BR. Thank goodness for Captain Green and State Coach Bandits. I'm still sad Broken Rubber Band broke up.

OP is having a tough time realizing that most people feel this way.

Exactly, most original music in BR is "rock" that refuses to rock. There's no bite, there's no edge, there's very little soul, there's no energy. It's just mellow-dramatic melody....not that there's anything wrong with that. It's just not most people's cup of tea.
Lafayette has a far superior rock scene and New Orleans has a far superior funk scene. What does BR have?
The best live original music in BR is probably country at the Texas Club, sadly.
ETA I've been to Chelsea's for songwriter night several times. I've also played in a BR band playing original music at Chelsea's among other venues many times in the past.

I don't think it's the musics fault, it's the people in it. It's pretty much a college town in regards to night life and within that, more of a party school... Good god, just walk around campus on game day and listen to the crap these kids are playing.
Like when I was in BR, there will always be a small collective of people that are in to good music, whatever your taste is (indie/punk/folk/funk), but music will never be ingrained into the fabric of the city like NOLA, Austin, or even more progressive college towns..
Thats just my 2 cents..

The other issue is venues. It's better now, but it wasn't that long ago that there were next to zero places that allowed original music to be played in this town. Now, there's Mud and Water, Chelsea's, Red Dragon, ect plus the Varsity giving local boys a chance. The problem is, there's been nothing for so long that there aren't any locals to play. Think about this, it's been 5 years since there's been a rock station in BR. Right now, the only rock music you can hear is 93.7 from Lafayette and it is staticy as all get out. The talent simply isn't being developed. The inspiration isn't there. The venues are sorta there now, but it's so much more profitable to be a cover band and it requires so much less creativity.
I would love to set the BR original music scene on fire, but I don't have a band, or the equipment, or the time. I might participate in some of those songwriters nights from time to time in the near future, though.

Now that Mud and Water is no longer, there really isn't really a top notch venue in Baton Rouge...JW moving shows to Chelsea's is a power move, however,

We need Da Rhogz to make a stop in BR before their Euro tour. Put a little life back into the scene

Laugh all you want, it won't make it less pathetic or less true.

I'll give you a hint. That band at one time had both members from Captain Green and Stagecoach bandits. We used to play a lot of shows with Onion Loaf and Gris Gris. We played regularly at Northgate Tavern (now The Library), the Varsity, Chelsea's, and at a place in Covington.
Don't worry too much, we were terrible.

England in 1819, Onion Loaf, Gris Gris, Benjey Davis Project, I could name more if I didn't have these damn work filters

I disagree. I have the album they put out and it's pretty good music. It's not the best stuff ever, but it was fun.

Why don't you stop by the Station and find out. Maybe listen to 93.7 when they do their local spotlight or head down there for an all local battle of the bands. It's good stuff if you like that genre. It's certainly more exciting than folk rock.

Man, that sucks. I had a feeling that place wouldn't last, though. Not enough bands or music fans to support it.

This. Doug is a cool guy to hang out with and Ray has some insane vocals.

The only band that I can think of off hand that can even remotely be called folk rock is Minos The Saint and that's a stretch.
There's some folk and there's a frick ton of good country but I don't have a clue where you're coming from with this folk rock shite
