Calling Elvis.

Editing just to say that Mark Knopfler has one of those guitar sounds that is instantly recognized, kind of like David Gilmour...you hear like 3 notes and know who it is.

Mark Knopfler is so talented. If you get a chance check out some of his soundtracks to films.

Sultans of Swing.

I still can't believe it's about a jazz band.

I have never really understood the topic. The words Dixie, Creole and London don't seem to go together.

I was a pretty young kid when my dad explained to me how they overheard a conversation to come up with the lyrics. Always liked the song after that.

Telegraph Road is a long time favorite.
Almost went with this song, it's really great, and if you've ever been to the Telegraph Road area, just south of Detroit, you get exactly what the song is about.
Fantastic piece of writing.

Love it musically, he makes the most of that resonator guitar in that song. I never thought it was his best work lyrically though.

Pretty sure the song is about the types of bands he used to play in, before Dire Straits was a thing.
He's a fantastic guitar player, but he had to struggle a bit. He didn't really fit into anyone's idea of a rock guitar player at the time.
He played with some pretty eclectic types of acts.
