I'd put my year up against most:
Born in the USA - Springsteen
Purple Rain
Like a Virgin
1984 - Van Halen
Footloose
Private Dancer - Tina
Heartbeat City - The Cars
Stop Making Sense - Talking Heads
The Smiths - The Smiths
Reckoning - REM

I feel like there was a lot ore songs popular in ‘98. But looking at the albums this is the list of the “popular” ones. A shot ton of the popular songs in 98 came off of albums that released in 1997.

Goats Head Soup
The Captain and Me
Band on the Run
Quadrophenia
Billion Dollar Babies
Pronounced Lynyrd Skynyrd
Mind Games
Countdown to Ecstacy
Dark Side
Ringo
Brothers and Sisters
Living in the Material World
Tales from the Topographic Oceans
... could very well be one of the top 2 or 3 years for rock ever.
