All my life when I have read somebody calling Bob Dylan a "legend" or something like that I have never quite understood his attraction. He can't sing very well. His songs are sort of strange (It Ain't Me Babe is perhaps my favorite of his songs and I like Cash's version best but it is really sort of a strange song too.)

I see he is on this European tour and fell down on stage and that made the news. LINK Why I wonder?

I kind of agree..

All of his songs are better when talented singers give em a go.

But.. they are great songs.

One of the all-time great songwriters. I highly respect him but do not enjoy his music.

He’s a singer-songwriter that is widely considered to be one of the best songwriters of all time.

Grew up in Dylan's heyday so I was always a fan. Fifty years later, after the drug-fueled haze has finally worn off and our minds have matured to a higher understanding we look at Dylan now and say . . .

WTF was he talking about ?

He was better when he was younger.

He started out as a folk singer and was seen as the heir apparent to the Woody Guthrie. That music was lyric driven and often as much lyrical poetry as simple story telling.

He is actually a very good guitarist and harmonica player. When he made the move from acoustic to electric it was big news in music world and influence country and western musicians who had previously considered electric guitars to be more of a Jazz or Rock and Roll instrument(as evidenced in the movie Walk The Line). He influenced a great deal of music in his heyday.

"All Along the Watchtower" was a dylan song. Hendrix does it better.

"Knocking on Heavens Door" is a Dylan song. A lot of people like Clapton's version better, others like GNRs better. I like all three about equally.

"Mr Tambourine Man" is a DYlan song. The Byrds knocked this one the park.

The song "Saved" off the album of the same name was covered by CHristian rock band Third Day, I like that version better.

There are tons of others, I'm sure.

I think the thing with him was as much as an influencer and songwriter as an actual singer.

I guess it all comes down to taste. I've never figured out how anyone could think the Ramones were any good.

Explain that. Everyone says that but why? What song is one of the best songs of all time that he has written?

Either you get Bob Dylan or you don't. I think he is one of the greatest musical artists ever. At his peak in the 60's, he rivaled the Beatles in album sales and popularity which shows you how many people loved him. Sure, he doesn't have a pretty voice but his phrasing is perfect and I think that lends authenticity to his singer/songwriter style similar to Townes, Tom Waits, Billy Bragg, etc.

He was the man in the 60's and it was a great time to be alive, to be an American.

On a cycle listening to "How Does It Feel to be a rolling stone ....", didn't get much better

You'd have to understand the historical significance of the times he came from -- he was a big folk artist when he originally got popular. He was very political in the 60's at the time of Vietnam, civil rights movement, Kennedy's/MLK assassinations, etc. He wrote important and poetic songs. He then went "electric" and got booed at a folk festival but accepted by the rockers.

Granted, he's always been one of the worst live performers I've seen or heard, but I still listen to some of his old stuff. I think it's easy to judge an old performer who's still kicking around, putting out albums, but has no connection to folks DECADES younger.

He actually put out some great songs in the 60's/70's, and yes, even when he performed them:
--Like a Rolling Stone
--Tangled Up in Blue
--Stuck Inside of Mobile with those Memphis Blues Again
--Knockin' on Heaven's Door
--Just Like a Woman
--Everybody Must Get Stoned
--All Along the Watchtower
--Just Like A Woman
