The first time great friends played together, Harrison asked 'where do you get all those words?'. Dylan replied 'where do you get all those chords?'.

I'm a Dylan listener as he's a musical icon in his own unique way. I agree you either like and appreciate his music or some people can't understand Dylan's lyrics and musical style
I'm a fan of Hurricane and the story behind the song.
* might wanna adjust that volume control due to language that will offend some people

Go listen to his album Blood on the Tracks from start to finish then come tell us if your opinion changes any. Yes, his voice is unconventional, but the man can fricking write.

The title of the song you mean is Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 and it's one of my favorites. On a side note, it's not about drugs but rather about being downtrodden by life in general.

Try watching his 30th Anniversary Concert.
You can hear everyone from Clapton to Petty do his songs, so you can appreciate the man’s writing and not have to hear him sing (until the very end).

Rick Nelson - I Shall Be Released
I like The Band's version as well but the tempo and steel guitar on here is fantastic

He is undoubtedly the greatest songwriter of all-time.

I'll take your word for it. Here are some of the lyrics to what must be some of the greatest songs of all time
Just saying.
How can you compare that to say Rick Berry---
Did berry get a literary prize??
quote:
Princess on the steeple and all the pretty
People
They're drinkin', thinkin' that they got it
Made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and
Things
You'd better take your diamond ring,
You'd better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags with the language that
He used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't
Refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to
Lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to
Conceal
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Just like a rolling stone?
quote:
Though I know that evening's empire has returned into sand
Vanished from my hand
Left me blindly here to stand but still not sleeping
My weariness amazes me, I'm branded on my feet
I have no one to meet
And the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming
quote:
Oh, get sick, get well
Hang around a ink well
Hang bail, hard to tell
If anything is goin' to sell
Try hard, get barred
Get back, write braille
Get jailed, jump bail
Join the army, if you fail
Look out kid
You're gonna get hit
But losers, cheaters
Six-time users
Hang around the theaters
Girl by the whirlpool
Lookin' for a new fool
Don't follow leaders, watch the parkin' meters
Just saying.
How can you compare that to say Rick Berry---
quote:
A fine little girl, she waits for me
Me catch the ship across the sea
Me sailed the ship all alone
Me never think I'll make it home
Louie Louie, oh no no no, me gotta go, oh no
Louie Louie, oh baby, me gotta go
Three nights and days I sailed the sea
Me think of girl constantly
On the ship, I dream she there
I smell the rose in her hair
Louie Louie, oh no, me gotta go, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, baby
Louie Louie, oh baby, me gotta go
Okay, let's give it to 'em right now
Me see
Me see Jamaica, the moon above
It won't be long me see me love
Me take her in my arms and then
I tell her I'll never leave again
Louie Louie, oh no, me gotta go, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, baby
Louie Louie, oh baby, me gotta go
I said me gotta go now

Simply put, Dylan merged Tin Pan Alley craftsmanship with Beat poetry.
Before Dylan pop songs went from point A through Point B to Point C. AD songwriters had the freedom to go from A to F to J and end at Q if they felt like it.
Fairport Convention - "Lay Down Your Weary Tune"

Don't expect me to defend the Nobel Prize when a few years earlier Obama won one.

To me I cannot comprehend how someone could say this about Bob Dylan. However, I feel the same as you regarding Van Halen.
Different strokes for everybody.

I used to be a huge Dylan fan. Now, while I still enjoy a lot of his stuff, I've come to the conclusion that he's somewhat overrated.

I only mentioned his influence, which is undeniable.

Oh he’s only the best songwriter of all time but what a fricking deadbeat. No, he can’t sing anymore at all, but back in his hay day he did ok and it wasn’t the sound of his voice that people loved him for, it was his songwriting.
