My boy the last couple days has wanted to piddle with my acoustic. Today he says he wants an electric. I explain that this is a Christmas or birthday caliber of present, and is not a run down and pick one up kind of thing. If he want his Christmas list and Santa list changed we could do that. He's having none of that.

He's 6. His needs are few. "Has to be gold". I laugh and told him if we cancel our Disney trip now I can pretty much get him a Les Paul. Lol.

Suggestions on a decent beginner and kid electric? Another factor is that I know my boy and he will be 50/50 on sticking with this. Would be nice if Dad can use it when he throws in the towel?

Get one of the packaged deals that comes with an amp and guitar. Squier and Epiphone have several They won't be great but they won't break the bank either. Will run you between 100 and 200.

Thanks man.

That looks more like a starter for myself. $250 is too much for my 6 year old, but not me.

You might begin convincing your six-year old that the middle color on a two-tone sunburst is kinda "gold," because you will have problems finding a metallic gold paint job on any new and cheap electric guitar. Bullion gold, metallic gold, shoreline gold, "goldtop," etc., is typically a multiple-layer coat process and subsequently a labor intensive finish, which is why you see blacks, whites, reds and simple bursts and not "goldtop" or metallics in general among reputable budget starter pack guitars, regardless of the country of manufacture.

If $250 is too much, what is the preferred price range?

Whatever it is, I'll throw in another brand to explore. Yamaha typically offers a solid bang-for-the-buck in their different price points, acoustics and electrics. But again, good luck with finding a "gold" in their lowest price points.

Musicians Friend

Look here, you can go by price. He'll probably need a smaller/junior size guitar as well.

My first electric was a red Epiphone SG. I still have it and play it when I'm feeling nostalgic. I started out with an acoustic since you don't need an amp to play and it helps build the calluses on your fingers due to the strings being harder to push down on.

Hope you find a good one for the little guy.

Well I borrowed the neighbors little BC package kid guitar. Love the damn thing.

I'm screwed now. Yet another wormhole.

By the way.

That being a Les Paul Copy, how legit is it in the weight? A Les Paul is one heavy bastard. Especially if strapped to my 6 year old. I know he will grow into it. Just don't want him scared of the thing.

Squire makes a 3/4 size strat guitar. Check guitar center, I think it's about 100-150 and well worth it. I'd give you mine, but I already gifted it to the neighbor's kids... Don't get him a full size electric, he will get frustrated and quit playing.

Thanks for the input.

Can you or anyone speak to the difference in the Squier or the Rondo "SX-RST"?

King Bob has me on Rondo's. It is basically the same guitar the Squier is but with a package? Or at least that is what's advertised. Both rate well on GC.

I think you can get that Squire in a package also. I would honestly look around on Craigslist. Tons of starter guitars there just waiting for a home. Most were played very sparingly.

Do 6 year old kids even have the motor skills to play the guitar? Drums might be better.

You're high off your arse! Drums take up real estate and my boy makes enough racket.

Don't tell that to the little 7 year old autistic kid who was playing Stevie Ray Vaughn on stage at the Autism walk.

They sure as hell aren't light. Not quite as heavy as a real Gibson, but they're definitely heavy. I'm a grown man and my neck is tired after playing my LP Clone (not a Rondo music one, admittedly), for hour and half sets.

I didn't realize when I made that recommendation that your kid was only 6. I would recommend the squire mini strat. If he sticks with it, then when he's in high school, let him move up to the Agile. Their $250 ones are ok, but their 3000, 3100, and 3200 series are much much better.
