Bittersweet Symphony sounds nothing like "Last Time" to me but not according to the courts.
This may be totally different......"Famous" by Puddle of Mudd uses the lyric "money for nothing and the chicks are for free"....the same lyric from Dire Straits "Money for Nothing". What, POM got permission to use that lyric?

Sounds like Puddle of Mudd was playing homage with a single line.
That said, Bruno Mars owes the Police some serious royalties.

What about Led Zeppelin/Howlin Wolf? That's been discussed in another thread recently.

Vanilla says Ice Ice Baby is totally not the same as Under Pressure...he's been quoted as saying that.

I remember something about tom petty and RHCP. Don't really know how that ended or if it's true. What bruno song sounds like message in a bottle?

What's the deal with covering another band's song during a live show? I've always wondered if there was some sort of protocol for that. Also bands that do the same song as another band and use their version on their album? Do they just have to say who wrote it?

Led Zeppelin enjoyed using "Long Train Running" by the Doobie Brothers for "Trampled underfoot"

It's usually not an issue and is seen as a tribute for a lot of bands

You have to get permission to put it on an album and usually are required to pay in some way or another, as you are making money off of their work.

Its cool to do. If you release the show afterwords you have to pay royalties and its based on how long the song is. So on a Live Phish release the tracking will be
1. Rock and Roll
2. Burgettstown Jam

Kafka, it´s He´s So Fine, of which George´s My Sweet Lord was purported to be a plagiarism.
