East Coast Hardcore Hip Hop vs West Coast Gangsta Rap

For years I always seemed to favor the L.A. scene (e.g. Dre, NWA, Snoop Dog, Xzibit,2Pac), particularly the G-Funk movement, but after listening to numerous albums the last few days I have determined that New York destroys L.A. when it comes to overall talent.
Mobb Depp, Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Notorious B.I.G., Public Enemy, etc. Game, set, and match.

Good topic.
I'd say that West Coast is more top heavy, as in the good stuff is REAL great. Then there is a large dropoff in material quality with a lot of shitty music and g funk ripoffs. Whereas with east coast there is a larger quantity of above average to great artists, albums, and songs.

Not into Gangster Rap or Hardcore Hip-hop per se, but in my experience in the time I did listen, I prefer East Coast due to better rhythms/beats and lyrics...Biggie, NAS, Mobb Deep...

i like the dirty south! Beats are by far the best. Atlanta, houston, and NOLA. Look no further than Mannie Fresh if you wanted the sickest beat around. And to lay back, and cruise throw in No Limit. Cash Money and No Limit records hands down the best

this. its almost 2 different types of music. west coast rap was all about high production value; i.e. great beats, catchy hook, etc.
east coast rap was all about the lyrics. the beats weren't as intricate or flashy.
the east coast rappers were telling stories in their song, the west coast guys just seemed to be matching up words that rhymed. lyrically, the east coast rappers shite all over west coast. west coast rappers like 2pac and snoop seemed more charismatic and were more like "entertainers", which is why west coast rap was more popular with the masses at the time.
