I play mainly rock and classic rock. I've messed around with some jazz too though. My friends dad was in a couple jazz bands and toured with a classic rock / blues band for years so he's showed me alot there.

Idk what kind of shells you have but mine are maples. They have nice range but I tune to a medium kind of tension up top. Basically bring it to resonance, even out the lugs and then tweak. There's one point when it just sings. That's where i leave it.

Then I crank my reso as high as i can without choking it out. Eventually it gets a good bend in the tone.

Once they're there, I see the whole kit up and tune my kick close in pitch to my 14" floor. Then work off that to get the rest dialed in nicely using tiger rag

In the end I get a great tone. Kinda big band sounding but more warm and mellowed. Best reference I can think of is Bonhams tone from Moby Dick but with more 'punch' and less 'pow' if that makes sense

What do you call a guy who hangs out with musicians?

The drummer

I love the look of that snare. What kind of sound do you get out of this?

Ever heard angels sing?

I have it with my reso nearly chokes, emperor x brought to slightly above resonance without sounding floppy, and loose wires. Its moon gelled too...about the only thing i could do to somewhat tame the ring.

Its pretty punchy but has some cut.

I love finding other drummers who are passionate about proper tuning. I tune my primary gigging snare drum (a 6 x 14 10-ply Gretsch New Classic maple) exactly opposite from yours: The reso is tuned about a half-step above the batter. That tuning really pulls out the "woody" quality...

Yep.

Didn't expect it to get as technical as it did.

Marching in Mardi Gras parades would cure you of that.

The one upside to playing snare was there were many along the route who felt that way so they passed you "refreshments".

I am curious what effect a refinish job like this to the interior of my congas would have....
