the last encounter I had with him, he made the backstage dressing room alcohol free.
you want to be supportive, but he didn't want to be around anyone with a drink in their hand.
it was weird. he was kind of a jerk to the sound guys and venue people as well.
oh well, awesome songwriter.

When Garden & Gun deemed Patterson Hood to be the South's Springsteen, I rolled my eyes. I have noticed as well that Hood seems to be his own biggest fan. He certainly did not shy away from the praise in that article.
I fear that the best of this band is behind them at this point. If English Oceans is any sign, I think that conclusion is a certainty.

I have been around Jay Farrar several times and have come to the same conclusion about him. The first two times, I thought he was just shy and aloof. After the third time, I concluded that he is simply an introverted, self-important a-hole that just so happens to be a phenomenal talent.

I think Cooley is fantastic songwriter. In fact, I think he is one of the very best working today. I know it's become the thing to bag on Hood's songs, but I think he's also outstanding, though not Cooley, who only writes a few songs per album. Hood has such a cinematic voice, and all of his best songs work as mini-screenplays. He has a fantastic ability for concise stories with tons of detail in a five minute song. And his inflection is outstanding. He owns his lyrics and gives them such an edge.
I think if you took everyone's 10 best songs, Isbell would rank last in the band, which speaks to the quality of the other two. Also, Hood really does give the band its voice.
But yeah, Goddamn Lonely Love is a perfect song.

i'd have to disagree with that, as well as most music critics.
I can't take most of the DBT's songs seriously
there's a lot of filler, and a lot of goofy shite.

Your opinion, sure. "Most music critics"? I highly doubt that assertion, and the appeal to vague, undefined authorities. DBT enjoyed a terrific critical rep before and after Isbell. I'd actually think Hood enjoys a better rep among the majority of critics than Cooley, even though I disagree with that. Cooley is the tits.

Saw them twice at the homecoming shows last month. Both were awesome. I think EO is a great album. Cooley FTW on this one. Hood's "Grand Canyon" is awesome on this one too.

I agree, I think it's a really good album. Not their best, but still very good. I like it more and more each time I listen. Not many bands are still this good after 10+ albums.

I like that it has a really raw and stripped down sound, but I don't think the sound/production always suits the songs. It's like the sound of the album doesn't allow for the band's personality to shine through enough. I don't know, I don't think it's a bad album, but something's missing. A couple of the songs are also head-scratchingly bland, like the second song, "When He's Gone." Not a horrible song but absolutely uninteresting on any given level.

You're right about When He's Gone. I don't skip it, but it's only okay. It's probably my least favorite song on the album and it's not a bad song.
What do you think about Till He's Dead or Rises? It's the first time Cooley has sung a Hood song. I like it.

I need to run through the whole album again but my initial listen was meh. "Made Up English Oceans" is as good as it gets on this record.

I like "Till He's Dead or Rises." Good song. My favorites are that one, "Primer Coat," "Pauline Hawkins," "Hearing Jimmy Loud," and "Grand Canyon."
