After recent actions by Phil Anselmo during the Dimebash event this past week, we have cancelled Down’s performance at the Civic. We do not tolerate intolerant behavior, and there is no room for that in our venue or our city. Refunds are available at point of purchase. In addition to offering full refunds for all ticket purchases, the Civic has made a donation to the Jewish Federation of New Orleans, pledging our support for a united community.

For those who don't know what happened

Down singer Phil Anselmo has recommended his band mates "move on" without him following an incident at this year's Dimebash where Anselmo said "White power" and made the Nazi salute on stage. Since the Dimebash performance – the same gig where Anselmo teamed with Dave Grohl and Metallica's Robert Trujillo to pay tribute to Lemmy – the former Pantera singer has apologized for his actions, but that didn't prevent the band from being pulled from Netherlands' FortaRock event over Anselmo's remarks.

Other venues have been cancelling his shows as well.

It's about time people take a stand. From what I understand he has had similar instances in the past where he blamed alcohol.

I seriously did not think a New Orleans venue would have the balls to pull the plug on a Down show.

As fricked up as all of this has been, it will not deter me from listening to his music.

A number of musicians and entertainers are fricked up individuals with warped political, sexual, social, and economic views. We need to be careful about the ones we vilify because chances are the ones being praised are just as crooked behind closed doors.

I am a Phil fan and a Pantera / Down fan, but after watching the video, you just can't buy his explanation. He's done similar things in the past and I guess just gets real effed up and it comes out again.

This is a bullshite move on Civic's part. While I detest what Anselmo said/did, censorship is not the answer. If people were boycotting the event, I can understand that. Instead the message from Civic is: If we don't agree with what you say, you can not play here.

That's a dangerous path to pursue

Yep, and there are plenty of good artists out there who are not ignorant pieces of shite.

Can't and Should are two different things. I am well aware of their ability to do what they want, but that doesn't make it right.

If it was something serious like refusing to bake a cake for someone, I might be on the Civic's side.

simply the market taking care of things. the venue doesn't want a half empty show so they cancel it and book another act.

not difficult.

Anselmo is a dick, and none of them liked him. That he was ever playing at a show for DD is insulting. Maybe I missed something, but did he make up with DD's family? I've not kept up with it.

But that's not what they said. If people said they wouldn't come to the show, that's a different story. This is a venue not allowing a band to play there due to a difference of opinion. Again, that's well within their rights, but it's a dangerous path to tread. Will they prevent Lauryn Hill from ever playing there? Public Enemy? I doubt it, nor do I think they should.

I don't understand your comparison. Please elucidate.

What is so "dangerous" about them booking whoever the hell they want to book?

And lulz at "white power" being merely a "difference of opinion".

How long has this been going on? I love Pantera but haven't kept up with any "news" on them at all in many years. I always viewed them - and Anselmo by extension - as liberal, anti-racist type guys. Although now when I go back and look at the No Good (Attack the Radical) lyrics, maybe they weren't saying what I thought they were.
