Unless it's some singer / songwriter ballad, lyrics are always the last thing I get around to.

Depends on who wrote it and what they say. Examples-
1. Lauryn Hill - "Zealots"
"And even after all my logic and my theory / I add a 'motherfricker' so you ignorant **** hear me."

2. Led Zeppelin- "Thank You"
If the sun refused to shine
I would still be loving you
When mountains crumble to the sea
There will still be you and me

Kind woman, I give you my all
Kind woman, nothing more

Little drops of rain whisper of the pain
Tears of loves lost in the days gone by
My love is strong
With you there is no wrong
Together we shall go until we die, my, my, my
An inspiration is what you are to me
Inspiration – look, see

Time by Pink Floyd has more meaning now as I get older, so…yes.

I would say both but for me, the music itself is the most important. I tend to learn and try to understand the lyrics later. But I do not let lyrics that either go against something I dont like or believe in deter me from liking a song.

Awful lyrics piss me off, especially if it's a great piece of music.
Even if it's a silly song, try to write the lyrics as well as you can and as crazy as you can dream up.
If you're not crazy enough, get some help. Don't half arse it.
Take the listener for a ride.
If they take the time to listen to your song, they deserve your best effort, not some slouch stuff.
The problem with the attitude in the OP, is that it excuses mediocre and piss poor material. We should all expect more.
That goes for everything.

Yes.

I grew up reading lyrics in the liner notes of albums.

Yes, assuming that I can understand the lyrics. There was a song with the line "The old master painted from the fields far away" . I thought that it said "The old masturbator from the fields far away" . I thought "Ghostbusters" was " Goat frickers ".

I love words. I love turns of phrase, carefully crafted sentences, playfulness with language and artists that are smart and have something to say; especially about the things that matter and the sort of themes that seem eternal. Maybe things like: The soul. Living with failure. Lost love. Love found. Dreams chased. Betrayal. Suffering. Redemption. Promises kept. Death. Rebirth. Without great lyrics, a musically brilliant song will always feel to me like a missed opportunity to leave a true and lasting mark on the world and in the hearts of future generations.

a song sounds good I typically don't care about the specific wording being used.

Feel the same way.

I hear lyrics almost as another instrument in my head over paying attention to the specific words being said.

Some yes, some no. I mean, I have to like the sound of the song. There has to be a good melody. I guess it's a bonus if I love the lyrics. I mean, I like The Pixies

A great song can overcome bad lyrics, and great lyrics can elevate a mediocre song. The greatest songs though are the ones where the music and lyrics complement each other to perfection.

I appreciate different songs for different reasons. Some I love purely for the lyrics. Others I like the groove or riffs and the lyrics are less important. There is no one-size-fits-all for me.

Your post reminds me of the lyrics to Hook by Blues Traveler. He is singing about how it doesn't matter what he says as long as it sounds convincing. (Side note: the song's chords are only a slight variant of Pachelbel's Canon. It really is quite a clever song on several levels)

It doesn't matter what I say
So long as I sing with inflection
That makes you feel I'll convey
Some inner truth or vast reflection
But I've said nothing so far
And I can keep it up for as long as it takes
And it don't matter who you are
If I'm doing my job, it's your resolve that breaks

Because the Hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
The Hook brings you back
On that you can rely

There is something amiss
I am being insincere
In fact I don't mean any of this
Still my confession draws you near
To confuse the issue I'll refer
To familiar heroes from long ago
No matter how much Peter loved her
What made the Pan refuse to grow

Was that the hook that brings you back
I ain't telling you no lie
The hook brings you back
On that you can rely

Suck it in, suck it in, suck it in
If you're Rin Tin Tin or Anne Boleyn
Make a desperate move or else you'll win
And then begin to see what you're doing to me
This MTV is not for free
It's so PC it's killing me
So, desperately, I sing to thee of love
Sure, but also of rage and hate and pain and fear of self
And I can't keep these feelings on the shelf
I've tried -- well, no, in fact, I lied
Could be financial suicide but I've got too much pride inside
To hide or slide I'll do as I'll decide
And let it ride until I've died
And only then shall I abide this tide
Of catchy little tunes
Of hip three minute ditties
I wanna bust all your balloons
I wanna burn all of your cities to the ground
I've found I will not mess around
Unless I play, then hey, I will go on all day
Hear what I say, I have a prayer to pray
That's really all this was
And when I'm feeling stuck and need a buck
I don't rely on luck because

The hook brings you back
I ain't telling you no lie
The hook
On that you can rely

I have to like them both. I can't like just the lyrics and not the music, and vice versa.

I also generally, with a few exceptions, don't like instrumentals.
