Do Limeys sing American on purpose?

And Aussies too for that matter. Do they distort their voice to sound American or is that how it naturally comes out? In the Irish and Scottish you can usually pick up a clip in the vocals.

I've talked to them.
They do it to get over with American audiences. All of them.

Well good. For a minute there I was worried our folk were singing Limey.

I've often wondered about it, but then Al Stewart and Oasis. Complete with the confusing postvocalic R.

We have American bands like Green Day who try to sound British

Yes, for the same reason that Robert Pollard sings limey.

Crissie Hinde tried to sound French a few times.

No. I've always taken it as proof that American is not an accent. It just is. The other guys have accents.
I find it interesting when they go out of their way to have the accent come through. My favorite instance is Aldous Snow in Forgetting Sarah Marshall singing "Inside of You".

Article I recently read on the subject
Great article. I have a few friends in Australia, one in England, and one in Scotland who always mockingly mimic an American accent and say "it's so easy to do." I usually point out that they grow up on American media, hence familiarity. The comments in that article by linguists who define our accent is neutral adds to it. Frankly, to sound American, just enunciate your words.

this is actually true. all native English speakers sounded what Americans sounds like today until just after the revolution when the British upper classes began using the accent to make themselves sound cool. Lower classes eventually followed suit and dialects developed.
