Only one of these can exist, the other one never happened based on your pick.

Cornell 77 or Vaneta, OR 72?

72 without hesitation
I would trade all of 77 for all of 72 as a matter of fact

that was the peak

I guess the good news is you can't be right or wrong with your selection.

Psychotic question. I love it.

I'd take this specific show in 77 because there are so many great 72 shows that I could find plenty with the right sound to scratch that itch.

Veneta I guess. The one drummer era is my favorite era with 73 being my favorite year.

Cornell is slightly overrated, amazing 2nd set, very good first set. Probably not the “greatest show ever” but all that is subjective as hell anyway.

same i go with 72 though because

great show but GOAT status was in large part afforded it due to the quality of the tape, which in the 80's was a unicorn. it can be picked apart just like any other...jerry's guitar being woefully out of tune, for example

no wrong answers but between 77 & 72 for me its a clear choice

You could say the same thing about great shows in 77, particularly May of 77. Hell, the Boston show before and the Buffalo show after are punching in the same elite weight class as Cornell. I've always thought the Boston show was just as good as Cornell, if not better. For that reason, I'll take Veneta 72. I also generally prefer the more acid-rock/modal jazz side of the Dead.

One knock on both of these shows is they both ended with my least favorite encore song ever: One More Saturday Night (quickly ducks head ).

No wrong answers but my vote is Veneta 72.
Barton Hall 77 has a special place for me as it was my first ever bootleg on tape that I wore out 5 times. But I’m not sure it would make my top 5 today
