Who’s going? Wish I were there visiting family because I would go for sure. They were fantastic though three weeks ago up here in Minneapolis.

Seems like a very strange choice of venue for them.

How depressing. Seems like The Varsity might've been an option.

The new Chelsea’s is really only similar in name (and good ownership) …. They need to canvas all sorts of music / private events / comedy as a solely event driven venue. And with a medium sized room and what I understand is top notch sound, they probably make even more sense on a Sunday than the Varsity would have …. And they are the only traditional venue of the sort operating.

Edit: just saw something pop up in the socials , so I guess the varsity is still open in some capacity but seems to be offering very little quality or booking vision (like when that a-hole that left for the casino booked it. Just terrible)

They had the Hodgetwins a while back. Chelsea's is definitely mixing it up.

Crowbar rocked the place. Went with a buddy of mine who was in Victorian Blitz with Kirk back in the day. This was my first time at Chelsea’s, and it was a very nice club - in fact, I can’t think of a nicer club I’ve been to a concert at in recent memory - roomy, nice bars, great sound, big stage, plenty parking, etc.
Spirit Adrift, the opening act from Austin, TX, was also fantastic…in fact, I preferred them over Crowbar (a bit too heavy and plodding for my taste). Spirit Adrift was still plenty heavy but with some real melodic rhythm guitar work.

Speaking of Crowbar, I’m a fairly new fan…somehow they always slipped through the cracks…I know they have a large discography, so where should I start?

Wouldn’t say I am the most well versed but I thought I heard Kirk say Odd Fellows Rest is his favorite. Sonic Excess in Its Purest Form has great songs too (Lasting Dose). Self titled has some of their best known songs (High Rate Extinction, All I had I gave, Existence is Punishment).

Seems like every album has a few killer songs in my opinion

I saw Crowbar in the 90s at the old Zeppelins in Fat City. There was a point I though my ears were going to start bleeding.

ETA: I think it was this show Youtube

I think one of Jimmy Bower's bands opened for them one night. Keyboard in the band? Don't think he was playing drums.

Yeah, I was 17 and didn't think of getting earplugs. Instead, I was stuffing napkins in my ears before I'd had enough and went outside.

In my opinion, if I need ear plugs at a show, the sound man is not doing his job. I have been to a lot of metal shows, but only walked out of a handful of them. Some sound men know how to make stuff sound good at a safe volume. Others just know “big number good”, or the band members continuously turn up and the sound guy fails to react.

If the metal band is not loud, the sound guy is NOT doing his job.

Thats the vibe of a metal show. A “safe” volume of below 85 dbs would sound ridiculous from a frequency perspective.

Also, It’s actually a federal requirement that a venue is supposed to provide hearing protection if requested.
