Country Covers That Beat The Pop/Rock Original

With the death of Bonnie Pointer I was rifling through old Pointer Sisters songs and clicked on "Slow Hand" and listened for a bit and there's no question Conway Twitty's cover destroys it.
The Pointer Sisters vs. Conway Twitty
The male-to-female perspective + Conway's growling delivery gives it more steam.

I thought Springsteen wrote that, but I was wrong, I confused that song with "Fire", which was another hit for them around that time. Somebody else wrote Slow Hand.
The writers were a couple of guys, it stands to reason that it would be a better song for a man to do.
As far as your title premise though, there aren't very many Country covers of Pop/Rock/Soul songs, that are nearly as good as the original. Usually they are pretty cringy.

Shameless by Garth Brooks is much better than the original written and sung by Billy Joel.

I don't think this version is necessarily better, but I think it's an awesome cover.

Had no idea that the Pointer Sisters first grammy was for Best Country Vocal by Duo or Group. Fairytale in 1974.
During quarantine we were listening to all sorts of stuff and the Pointer Sisters cover of Dirty Work by Steely Dan popped up and we went down a rabbit hole. I always thought of them from their 80's dance hits but they covered a range of genres.

I like the original, but Cash's take on "Hurt" is so good.
He does a fantastic version of "I hung my head" too.

Same with Rusty Cage.

I remember a bunch of these covers around the late 90’s/early 2000’s. I just remembered cringing listening to a country cover of Aerosmith’s “Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing”.

I agree with you which is why I started the thread. It's pretty rare.
I just wonder if there are more than we might think.

Brooks and Dunn’s cover of My Maria is good.

Again, not necessarily "better", but ones I've always liked.

I was just considering starting my first thread on the subject of excellent covers, not limiting to country covers.

Wow. This one just popped up in my YouTube queue...
"Don't Think Twice It's All Right" - Jerry Reed & Chet Atkins vs. Bob Dylan
Both great.
