Cody is good but Sturgill Simpson/Johnny Blue skies is my favorite modern country singer right now. Red clay strays and 49 Winchester are also excellent.

Stapleton is probably the best truly mainstream country artist.

Jamey Johnson for me in that category.

Stapleton is a good dude. He sent a bunch of autographed items for a fund raiser we recently did for a children’s cancer charity.

Chris Stapleton is an actor trying to be country.

He sucks and his “best” song, Tennessee whiskey, was a rip off from David Allen Coe with music from Etta James. Although I think George Jones sang it best.

Well this is just an utterly stupid take.

He’s not an “actor” trying to be country. He’s been singing and writing country music for a long time. He was a bluegrass frontman in the early 00s. He’s also a prolific enough writer that he’s written for other genres as well.

And don’t even get me started on Tennessee Whiskey being his “best” song. It may be his best mainstream cover but it’s not his best song by quite a bit.

So your example is covering another's song. Like his claim to fame, covering a David Allen Coe song. Yeah, he's ok.

I like Sturgill, Cody, Jamey, Colter, Tyler, Steve, Shooter,etc.,....but IMO none of them compare with Charlie Crockett.

Stapleton is objectively good, but he lacks the "it factor"

None of his songs pull at the heart strings.

IMO his best work was with SteelDrivers. He is actually a competent Bluegrass flat picker, which may sound like faint praise but it isn't. While he isn't Dan Crary or Tony Rice he definitely knows how to work a Blue Chip.

Seems like a good guy, but I just don't think he's any sort of great vocalist or anything.

To me he sounds like the lead singer of a Travis Tritt cover band.
