This is just gonna be a thread where I update on Central Texas, mostly country/americana/folk, scene goings on.
I happen to run a local music calendar that I publish daily that has all the listings in my area.

Tonight I'm going to a podcast recording, Modern Day Jesters, which will have Walt Wilkins and Alli Mattice as the guests. I'm kinda fan boying and want to get Walt to sing Pat Green's Carry On that he and Pat wrote together.
Mainly because I want to hear Walt Wilkins sing:
Ol' Walt Wilkins lives up in Nashville,
You know his eyes have seen the miles,
Walt why don't you jump in Jim T's caddy,
Come down to Texas and drink with me awhile
We'll see.

Great song.
I went to school in San Marcos and miss that area.
I love Cheatham Street Warehouse, Whitewater Amphitheater, River Road Icehouse, and of course Gruene Hall.
Try to get back as much as I can.

Its amazing the number of shows in the NB/SM area.
Today, there are 25 live music events (and I don't get most of SM, just Cheatham and a couple of others). This Saturday, 38 shows. We have a great number of venues and awesome local musicians, plus the regular traveling groups like Willie at Whitewater for 3 shows next year.
My dream is to start something like the Bluebird, but keeping with the theme, calling it the Gruenebird. We shall see.

Great show last night. That basement is pretty small and we legit had at least a hundred people crammed in there. Glad I got there early so I could get a seat for myself and my friends that are somewhat notoriously late to stuff.
The basement of the Phoenix Saloon has got to be one of the best 'listening room' type places around. I'm afraid that if this continues that the podcast will outgrow it and we'll have to move somewhere less intimate, but I'm just a listener.
Walk Wilkins is hilarious. Played some great songs. Alli was pretty good but you can see the difference in a guy that's been writing, producing and performing for 25+ years and someone just starting out. And part of my deal with Alli is that I just don't get into female country music singers. I don't know why, they just never really do it for me. The podcast (roughly 1.5 hours) will probably posted later today.
Here's a picture:
That's Shawn Hart, Walt Wilkins, Alli Mattice, and Eric Langenhahn (Alli's lead guitar and also the lead in Hipsonic).
Edit: He just posted that the equipment malfunctioned and the show wasn't recorded, dang.

Flatland Cavalry sold out Gruene Hall Friday. They have another show there tonight. They are damn good I’d love to see them sometime

Love that song. I prefer Pat’s 2009 re-recording of it over the two previous versions he did. I sat in with a band last night who played it. Fun song to play...

I’ll be checking in to maybe discover new music. Only thing I have to add is that I really dig Mike and the Moonpies.
Steak Night at The Prarie Rose is a great song.

Check out:
Oilfield Blues - Comanche Moon
Cherokee Blood - Cody Barnett
13 Folds - Cody Sparks Band
Texas Highway - Cody Bryan Band
Leaving Midland - Tanner Fenoglio
These are a few of the latest songs I’ve been listening to in the Texas music scene. Good stuff I think. The playlist on Spotify “top Texas country and red dirt singles” is pretty good about adding new stuff weekly.

Went with my daughter yesterday afternoon to Gruene Hall to see Guy Forsyth's Christmas Show.
Was dang good. Their rendition of Amazing Grace, wow.
We got there towards the very end of Slim Bawb - and I love Slim Bawb. Dude sings Americana, in fact was nominated for a Grammy for Best Americana Album of the Year. We have a fairly highly rated Americana station, KGNB. Do you know which station doesn't play Slim Bawb? Darndest thing I've ever seen.
Anyways, loved Guy. Pro tip: If you ever go to Gruene Hall, go across the street to Mozie's, get some garlic fries, bring them in and enjoy with your long neck.
Slim Bawb had a good crowd, then it filtered out and Guy's crowd filtered in, and in, and in. Gruene Hall was rocking for that free show.

They were up in San Marcos at The MARC a couple of weeks ago filming an episode of Tx Music Scene with Kevin Fowler.

I saw it today, and should have seen it 5 months ago when the CD was released, but local kid John Baumann had a song released by Kenny Chesney on the Songs for the Saints album called Gulf Moon. I really like John - we saw him do a Wednesday show with Josh Grider and Drew Kennedy at Gruene back in October.
And Drew will be the special guest with Zack Walther at Freiheit this Wednesday. I'll have to beg the wife to go see that one.

Last Friday, Tejano Album of the Year Grammy Award winners Los Texmaniacs made a stop at Krause's Cafe in New Braunfels. New Braunfels is a German town founded in 1845 by Prince Solms of Braunfels. Krause's was an old cafe that eventually shut down. A few years back, a genius named Ron purchased it and revamped it. It now has an indoor restaurant, outdoor biergarten and an even further outdoor pavillion. There's nights (like Friday) when we'll go and they are slap full in all 3 areas. So if we ever go just to listen to a group and drink, I'll bring the folding chairs because there's still space.. just no chairs.
Los Texmaniacs was really good. They played mostly cojunto.
And its amazing how much alike cajun, german polka and the various TexMex music varieties are. They all tend to be accordion heavy so sometimes the only difference might be the language being sung.

I love that place. My friends have spent a few nights playing pool and dropping money in that jukebox down there.

I saw something about a songwriters' festival being staged recently in Dripping Springs. Have you heard about that, and if so, did any good music come out of there?
