"Congregation" is way too raw to be considered anything but third best. And "Gentlemen" and "Black Love" are two completely different albums. "Gentlemen" is a bastard rock album that just happens to be a classic while "Black Love" is the apex of the sound the Whigs had been moving toward their entire career.

Anyone remember this guy? Seemed to peak when the movie Trees Lounge came out. Apparently he's still recording, but I don't think he ever really caught on in the U.S.

You Am I is my entry in to this discussion... although they were huge in Australia...
They had/have it all... the songs, the chops, charismatic frontman, etc...
I think their lyrics, for the most part, were too "australian" for success in the US... they were blowing Oasis away night in and out, opening for them back in the day...

I think it may be a point of entry thing, shutterspeed. That, very often, is the difference. But to call "Gentlemen" a bastard rock album is befuddling.

By "bastard" I mean that "Gentleman" doesn't seem to really fit the mold after "Congregation." I can see it following "Up in It" moreso. It's a pretty straight ahead rock album (albeit with some dark themes). "Congregation" lines up more with the soul and cinematics of "Black Love" to me.

Even though Butch Walker is one of the biggest songwriters/producers in the world right now, Marvelous 3 was probably the most talented band I ever knew.

These guys were from the Denton/North Texas area and played around Dallas a bunch. I really enjoyed their music as it was a precursor to Red Dirt music. Look em up. I'd post a link, but I'm on my phone.
