It's no different from what Patsy Cline or Chet Atkins did.
So which of these folks are singing like Patsy or playing like Chet?

You can't recognize the difference between what Patsy Cline did, and Hank Williams? You've got to think about it in context of what was "normal" at the time.
It is an unfortunate progression, for sure.

Cline sure sounds "country" today, but barely recognizable as country when released.
Btw, I absolutely love Cline.

This is gonna be a CSB, and there is know way I can prove it, but here goes: I can't stand country music in any form with rare exception. I was in high school back in the 80's and was arguing with a friend of mine and telling him how easy it was to come up with a dumb title and make a country hit. Mind you I can't sing or play. This was the mid 80's, and the title I came up with was "she thinks my tractor's sexy".
This was a good 10 yrs before the actual song came out, and I SWEAR it's true!!!

Luke Combs is cookie cutter country. He’s fringe bro country. He has no room to talk

This may be a “hot take”, but I’m actually going to go with 9/11. 9/11 spawned a genesis of jingoistic cash-grab patriotism songs which were played nationwide. It’s hard not to hear the “boot up your arse” song and not also hear “Beer for My Horses” or “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy”. Those songs nearly immediately followed it. Once College Gameday embraced Big & Rich, it was over.
