Jerry is the better comp, I think. Reinterpreting old classics in new styles, solid to very good songwriting, and the other-worldly ability on guitar. Billy is a better singer I'd say though.

Just for shits and giggles, have you seen him live? When?

He is the most talented guitar player on the planet. Derek Trucks would be his main competition.

That’s fair. Bluegrass roots connects them too.

Billy is a much “showier” guitar player, he plays more licks in a song than jerry did his whole career. Yeah, yeah bluegrass i know.

Also, ill take jerrys voice over billys, ESPECIALLY during ballads.

I agree with this. Jerry singing Morning Dew is unrivaled. But he’s not here anymore unfortunately.

I can’t wait to watch the biopic they’ll make about Billy Strings 60 years from now.

Already a pretty compelling biopic knowing his story, he just needs to continue to grow bigger

There are hundreds, maybe more, guitarists on his level and better.

When you get to that level, there is not a significant talent difference, but it is more about style, tone, preference, etc.

There is Guthrie Govan, Richie Kotzen, Marcus King, Derek Trucks, John Mayer, John 5, Buckethead and many more.

Even among strictly bluegrass guitarists, he's not a slam-dunk for the best.

Where did you get the idea that Billy Strings is even in the running for best guitar player on the planet? That's fricking crazy.

ETA: There is no "best" guitarist. Of all time or currently living. It's an argument that cannot be won. Similar to best artist or best author. There is too much subjectivity.

With the skills he has at his age, he absolutely belongs in the conversation.

But like you said, its all subjective anyway.

I agree somewhat. I have seen Billy 4 or 5 times now. He has a few good songs and I like his shows when I'm boomin. I cannot jam him in the car. I need some drums after awhile.

Maybe I'll listen to the shows where Duane Trucks sat in.

Lots of bluegrass starts to sound the same to me. I do appreciate the scene and the crowd that Billy brings. Love to see the younger crowd keeping the head scene alive.

I don't think I ever stated he was the best guitarist on the planet and 100% agree it's an argument that is pointless. Was actually curious where your head was at on other players. I've listened extensively to all the ones you've listed aside from Kotzen.

I don't think it's crazy that he's in that discussion of greats though.

Someone else stated he was the greatest living guitarist. Perhaps I confused them with you. Sorry.

It's a bluegrass string band. Rarely does bluegrass involve drums.
Why does it irritate you?

He's 32-years-old. You act like he's a kid. He's basically middle-aged for a musician.

Eddie Van Halen was already 7 albums deep and playing with Sammy Hagar by this point.

Eric Clapton had already played with Cream, Derek and the Dominos, the Yardbirds and Blind Faith by the time he was 32.

I understand that. I just like a heavier rhythm section.

I like some bluegrass songs, but as a genre, I can't listen to it for an extended period of time.

I have no doubt the guy is super talented, etc... and have nothing against him or anyone that likes him..

But I couldn't imagine sitting through more than 10-15 minutes of that before I had my fill and was ready to go...

Yea, his hardcore fans don't understand that bluegrass is an extreme niche musical category.

Billy Strings barely has a million followers on Spotify, which is extremely low for his supposed level of popularity.

That does not negate his obvious talent. He's a great guitar player, no doubt.

Best on the planet talk is little silly though.

All I know is I have see him live in NOLA over the last 3 NY and he is getting better each year. His covers of other people songs are fantastic and many of his more "electric bluejam songs" are essentially a new genre.

His live shows are so much fun because Billy MF Stings is the man.
