Kris is a pure genius. I can't figure out why his performances of his own songs didn't get more recognition. Sure his voice is mediocre, but those are the most authentic versions.

I like how Waylon and others like to correct his grammar.

Example of Beat the Devil
Kris- I don't believe that no one wants to know.
Waylon- I do believe that someone wants to know.

I agree. His versions are the grittiest, most "truthfull" versions.

I'll throw Hank Williams and David Allan Coe into the conversation.

Hands down Hank.

His influence cut across all genres and artists for the next 20-30 years.

For it's time this was some of the cleverest shite ever penned.

"I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive"

Now, you're lookin' at a man that's gettin' kinda mad
I had a lot a luck but it's all been bad
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive

My fishin' pole's broke, the creek is full of sand
My woman run away with another man
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive

My distant uncle passed away
And left me quite a batch
And I was livin' high until the fatal day
A lawyer proved I wasn't born, I was only hatched

Everything's agin me and it's got me down
If I jumped in the river I would probably drown
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive

These shabby shoes I'm wearin' all the time
Is full of holes and nails
And brother, if I stepped on worn-out dime
I bet a nickel I could tell you if it was heads or tails

I'm not gonna worry wrinkles in my brow
'Cause nothin's ever gonna be alright no-how
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive

When I think of lyrical genius, one song always sticks out in my mind and that is "Helplessly Hoping" by Crosby, Stills, & Nash. If you haven't heard it, please listen to it.

Best new song writer these days .Tyler Joseph from Twenty One Pilots. "Pop" band with substance, somewhat of a rarity.
