I would have said Ryan Adams 10 years ago, but I feel like he's dipped quite a bit.
I'll give you that his last record has set on my shelf since about the third listen, but I write that up to it just not being my style of music. It seems to be very good for what it is and he's gotten a lot of praise for it. Apparently Letterman loved the first single so much that he asked him to play it twice.

I would choose Joe Pug.
Others would be Adams, Isbell, Gregory Alan Isakov, Moreland and James McMurtry.

Brantley Gilbert HANDS.DOWN.
Man he really speaks to me and takes me back to the days of dirt roads and coolers on the tailgates. They don't make songwriters like that anymore.

All I know is Baton Rouge's music scene must suck because no one ever goes to singer/songwriter events on a random Wednesday night, which is entirely indicative of the music scene as a whole.
The songwriters in the round nights at Chelseas are actually pretty stacked with talent. There are some really good guys that come play.
@OP, Chris Knight.

I believe the songwriter of that band is named Justin Vernon.

Damien Rice is very good but a bit one dimensional.
My vote goes to John Mayer.

how so? he's very dynamic IMO but i'm very familiar with all of his songs and have seen him live twice.

As am I.
Take a song like The Box. You could place that song on O or 9.
John Mayer's latest stuff would feel way out of place on Room For Squares. Just my opinion.
Oh, and i really like Damien Rice. He's good .... when I'm depressed.

I'm seeing Damien Rice live for the first time in a couple weeks. So pumped.
I definitely wouldn't describe him as one-dimensionsal, but I know what you're getting at. He doesn't really write happy feel-good songs. Most deal with failed relationships and other life struggles. He conveys emotion through music masterfully.

Songwriter: it is John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats. I'm not usually into "bests" with music because it can be very subjective. However, writing is not subjective. The best songwriter alive today is objectively John Darnielle.

you may have a point there
he's not a "happy songwriter"... he's got very little uplifting songs, but he's good at what he does.

you're in for a treat. if it's with the full band, expect a rock show. I was shocked at how different the live show was compared to the album.
