Gotta be Paco de Lucia right?
Here's a CSB about Paco de Lucia. My son and I are both guitarists, and we got tickets to see Tommy Emmanuel at the Napa Valley Opera House some years ago. We also got tickets to the meet and greet with Tommy before the show. My son said to Tommy, "I'm a big fan. I think you're the greatest guitarist in the world." Tommy replied, "Thank you, but I'm not the greatest guitarist in the world. I do know who is, though." Intrigued, I asked him who it was. His answer: Paco de Lucia.

Need to queue up my copy of Friday Night in San Francisco. What a classic guitar record that is.

I had the privilege of seeing Paco de Lucia with Al Dimeola, and John Mclaughlin either 1980 or 81 in Houston.

Amazing. Have been a fan since the early Praxis work. Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis) was mind blowing back in the early 90s. I started going through his "Pikes" recordings a couple of years ago. Way too much to absorb (there were around 250 then, a lot more now) and a lot of it is experimental stuff he just documents. But he's way more versatile than people who just know him as a blazing shredder realize. He's not as prolific in terms of riffs and appealing, memorable melodic compositions as Satriani and I think that's where a lot of people ding him.

Broke the jangly, jagged, over the top playing that Segovia was referring to.

Paco De Lucía has some amazing classical work, wherein he'd previously simply said 'Im not familiar with this, give me a few days', and then proceeds to master it.

I believe he plays Concierto de Aranjuéz with a full philharmonic, and brings the house down.

I'll search for it.

There’s a quite few I left out not intentional; just didn’t come to me at the time I posted. I’d say probably about 300 guitarists at the least that are truly phenomenal in their abilities and craft. The best of anything is an opinion. Unless you say “one of the best is....” then everyone will agree

Legend. 'Tosco', however. People citing his 'Malagueña' don't understand tone and feel.

Versatile, capable of anything, yes. Legendary guitarrist whose HeeHaw days made many forget his virtuosity, but he's not in the mix.

The Neil Peart (RIP) of the guitar.

The legendary guitar play Jimi Hendrix was blown away by Terry Kath's guitar playing. When first hearing Terry Kath play, Jimi Hendrix was quoted as saying that he thought Terry Kath played guitar better than he did. It was later on reported that Jimi Hendrix also called Terry Kath the “Best Guitarist in the Universe.”

this is why many love Rafael de Burgos

Sublime. Clásico.

Pepe Romero doesn't suck, either.
