My prediction for 2010's would be Black Keys

I can understand the U2 pick, but the RHCPs? They were unlistenable in the 90s for me...
The guy who picked REM for the 90s is puzzling too... Assuming he meant the 80s?

It'd be interesting to know the ages of people for perspective... I mean, it's one thing to hear Dinosaur Jr. when they first came out, then find out about them retrospectively... after youve already heard tons of bands that were influenced by them (just one example)..
I mean I get someone who liked STP in HS... but after their taste has developed

I started an REM thread once. Never again.

60s Beatles
70s The Clash
80s REM
90s Beastie Boys
00s Sleater-Kinney
Certainly not by consensus here, but it depends on who you're hanging out with, doesn't it? And according to metacritic, S-K is the best reviewed band of the 00s aside from Spoon, who never quite hit the heights of S-K's best (The Woods). The Clash is a toss up with the Stones, but the Stones really had nothing going on from like 1974-78. The Clash didn't form until 1977, and then promptly released three of the best albums ever and changed the music industry even more enduringly than Nirvana.

Thats a pretty good one Baloo, wouldn't have thought of the Beastie Boys but thats a good choice.
I love Sleater-Kinney but I dont see them being up there.

The release of Metallica, and the 3 years of touring to support the album were legendry accomplishments, that changed the industry. Yes, their best work was probably from the 80's, but that doesn't detract from their greatness in the 90's. The burn out factor was huge, but they still put out gems on every release, and their live performances were riveting.

Agreed. Floyd and Zep are sort of 1a and 1b but I would choose Floyd first always.

Good list. I would go with Floyd for the 70's and probably U2 for the 80's. Although VH was rockin it in the early 80's...
But good call with Metallica and Radiohead. I was a huge Metallica fan from the late 80's thru the 90's. Not anymore. Although RHCP, PJ, AIC, Soundgarden, and Nirvana were all huge for me as well.

I love Mick Taylor. But he's a victim of arbitrary endpoints. Let It Bleed, IMO the Stones best album, was released in 1969. So the Stones, who had one of the best four album runs in history, lose one of those albums to the decade turning. Which puts them on equal footing with the Clash. and he left the band in 1975 after the, let's face it, pretty crappy Goat's Head Soup.
Each band was only around for half a decade, really, but were so awesome I could understand either being band of the 70s. I just gave the clash the extra credit for London Calling.
Switching gears...
Metallica's 90s output is pretty mediocre. OK, there's the black album, which was a huge seller and I'll leave questions of quality up to each person. But let's just spot them the album and say it is the greatest thing ever. They only released two more albums of original material in the 90s: Load and Re-Load. And even the most diehard Metallica fan admits that its not their best (I actually think Load is incredibly underrated). But three original albums, two of which are essentially one double album of the band's B-level work is not "Greatest band of the Decade" material. Especially when their best albums were all in the 80s. Hell, I'd consider an argument for Metallica as best band of the 80s. Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and And Justice for All is an a great, great run (and that's not including the Garage Days Revisited EP). Right up there with the Stones run of four great albums in a row.

I can go along with this, I'm not a huge Tool fan, but I dig their stuff.
Pearl Jam / Red Hot Chili Peppers are a toss up for me
