without even reading I am going to guess half the posters said "Neil Peart".

Maybe because he's an extremely talented drummer. I'm sure your opinion is the best, though.

There's a live Sultans of Swing on YouTube where he is on fire and at one point the camera swings back to Mark and someone else and they are both watching what Pike just did and look at each other and laugh like WTF did you just see that! Classic.

Probably this performance. Withers fricking murders this song Sultans of Swing

Also I'm not sure if anyone mentioned Jeff Porcaro of Toto but that guy was a beast.

Close but not right. Look up Buddy Harman instead of Buddy Rich.

Here's another thing about drummers : you can't really judge their ability by their regular gig. The great ones have a great meter and can really do anything you need.

I don't like to drop names much, but many years ago, I was doing a pretty serious session. I had a good friend who is a session guitar player that I have known since childhood, one of the original swampers (that my friend knew well, and he agreed to help me out), a bass player that was really great. I didn't have a drummer though, and the guy that the studio owner brought in, was terrible. It wasn't going to work.

So he says to me " I can have the perfect guy, here in 2 hours I will take care of 1/2 of the fee, but it will cost you 300 bucks..a lot of money to me then.

It's Mark Herndon from ALABAMA.

Nothing that I was doing, was remotely similar to what they did, but he said " trust me". I did. I didn't have much choice.

He comes over, friendly as can be, but all business. Nails everything in a matter minutes. Everybody was amazed by how damn good he was, and they had worked with some really great ones before.

That's the thing about drummers though, the really great ones can get overlooked easily, if they aren't in a gig that showcases them some.

That's Alchemy Live, recorded in July 1983. Therefore, the drummer is Terry Williams, having replaced Pick Withers a year or so before.

Now, this was the Love Over Gold tour and Withers played on Love Over Gold, but Williams was the drummer at this point.

Good catch. Adding Williams to my list. His playing seems almost effortless.

And he only played on 1 Dire Straits studio album - Brothers in Arms and really the only thing that remains is his intro to Money For Nothing.

Omar Hakim (another fine, fine drummer with a great vibe) recorded almost every part Williams did and is the main drummer on that album.

We saw Buddy Rich play in some mall near San Jose CA back in 1979...a fricking mall...

No one has mentioned Tony Williams or Alphonse Mouzon..
