To OP, this is a good thread. A ton of songs I didn't realize were covers.
It was only a few years ago when i was adding some Otis Redding songs to my playlist that I came across "Hard to Handle". I was quite surprised.

I forgot to put my favs down.

Tennessee Whiskey- Chris Stapleton (original was done David Allan Coe and then George Jones)

The Promise- Sturgill Simpson (Original was done by When in Rome in the late 80's)
I don't know what possessed him to pick that song to cover from a one hit wonder.

Original: When in Rome
Cover: Sturgill Simpson

This Ol' Cowboy - Marcus King Band.
I believe The Marshall Tucker Band did the original.

Great bass lines, good jam song.

The original was titled I'd Rather Go Blind and was done by Etta James. Coe wrote different lyrics but the melody is a note for note rip off of Etta James.

I'd rate their versions of Where Have All the Good Times Gone? and Dancing in the Streets as being better than both of these.

None of the covers were better than his, IMO but I love Lead Belly so

I do like Led Zeppelin's cover of Gallows Pole better than his version, though.

This is one where they are so different in the approach that I almost think of them as two different songs that I like equally.

There are also a few covers I like very much but I still like the original a little better:

Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night

Leadbelly - Where Did you Sleep Last Night

Cream - Crossroads (1968)

The Black Crowes version could be my least favorite of the Hard to Handle versions

Hard to Handle

My favorite could be Pigpen with the Dead

eclipsed the original... You're No Good - Linda Ronstandt

no way

Poor Poor Pitiful Me is absolutely better than the original by Zevon.

And IMO, her version of Tumbling Dice is better than the Stones.
