Beatles v Led Zep

While I’m over here, I have a question.
Why is it that the thousands of successful recording acts who drew influence from the Beatles are said to have simply been influenced by John and Paul….yet when a band sounds like Zep, it’s automatically implied they are ripping them off?

Led Zeppelin was the greatest cover band of all time.

Because the Beatles literally influenced everyone. Zeppelin had a few bands that imitated them.

Led Zeppelin was great, but you are comparing them to the band that had the greatest song writing and song compositions in the history of modern music.

Oh no doubt. I’m a huge fan and understand the full impact the Beatles had on popular music.

The Beatles were the greatest band and the first modern rock band.
Led Zepplin were the greatest of a genre of rock. They were never pop. Only rock and arguably the first of hard rock.
The Beatles were copied by everyone because they were first. Anyone else u can name who were earlier are a guy and his support cast. Like Bill Haley AND THE COMETS. The Beatles were just a pop act until the world realized how good they all were. With 2 of the best songwriters of all time and a 3rd who was just under that.

Zeppelin was electric blues. They took the riffs from the Mississippi Delta and played them hard and loud. They were all tremendous musicians, but played mostly black American music
The Beatles were a vocal group. Their strongest asset was their harmonies as well as original melodic songwriting. Their impact on pop culture cannot be overstated.

I get it. I love the Beatles, but I still don’t understand why folks simply can’t say….you can really hear the Zepp influence, instead of saying….they just ripped off Zepp.

Interesting question...
Did Zeppelin rip off more people than they influenced?
...and I'm not trying to be a smart arse. I actually like quite a bit of Zeppelin.

This is an often repeated trope, but it’s bullshite and intellectually lazy.
Zeppelin had a small amount of outright covers, but did have other songs influenced or adapted from old blues songs.
Only around 4 or 5 of their top songs were covers or derived from previous songs, and most of those were only loosely based on old blues tunes - not outright covers.

That's not the point. They totally ripped off several older blues songs and artists and didn't give credit to them (on their albums) until they were forced to.
It's very well documented.
This topic pops up here several times per year, and it really triggers people.

I’m well aware, but that has nothing to do with the post I was responding to, that called Led Zeppelin a cover band.
When they have a fantastic catalog of original music.
The failure to give credit to other artists is a completely different issue, and affected a lot of bands in that era.

Understood
Sorry and I agree

No problem.
Regarding the other issue you mentioned.
I’m certainly not triggered by the issue, but it is very misunderstood.
Blues music was a dead genre. Even the most famous artists were broke nobodies by the early 60s, until British rockers like Eric Clapton and John Mayall discovered old blues records.
Bands like the Rolling Stones, Cream and Zeppelin “ripping off” blues artists was the greatest thing that ever happened to them.
Yes, they should’ve been credited properly. But most of the songs were drastically different, and loosely based on the original. And many of the original recordings were bootlegs and the record companies defunct.
It is interesting that British rockers are mostly responsible for saving this inherently American art form.

But there are quite a few where it seems like they are actually trying to mimic Zep - especially Plant.
Kingdom Come comes to mind.

Add Billy Squire to the Zep list.
The Beatles have a lot of sound-a-likes:
Stealers Wheel and Badfinger, being the most prominent in my mind. Then there is the Monkees, which were a fake band but complete knockoff of the Beatles.
