Why don't people make music like this anymore?

These bass riffs on almost every measure are just ridiculous.

Louis Johnson of the Brothers Johnson. All over Off the Wall and Thriller.

If you dig the bass playing, I recommend checking out the Brothers Johnson record, Look Out For #1.

I've been listening to this a lot recently:

I think it's the greatest bass playing on any popular song ever.

Give the white boy some love.

Hey, let’s put the Jimi Hendrix of bass with Sam and Dave. Magic!
Wait until that chorus hits.

Whatever else you think of MJ about his personal habits, all the non-musical drama surrounding his life (and I am sympathetic to a degree for a person who was denied a childhood, very likely abused by his father, etc.), once he became an adult star and working with Quincy Jones, the production quality was off the charts high.

The "Big 3" (Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad) had an all star roster of musicians. For Off the Wall, the rhythm section was Louis Johnson and John "JR" Robinson. Thriller had Johnson and Jeff Porcaro (except Beat it, which had a rare bass part by Luke - Luke and Porcaro had to save that track for Quincy with dubs and a lot of post-recording work). Bad saw mostly synthesized bass parts, mostly JR on drums, but the 3 albums saw basically the best of the best of LA session musicians of the 80s.
