Bands who sounded differently than their singles led you to believe

What bands out there have singles that sound differently than the rest of their work? Spacehog comes to mind for me. "In the Meantime" was a great single, but the rest of their debut album was nothing like it. Very disappointing.

The opposite of your premise, but Blind Melon. I hated No Rain when it was released, but upon hearing the rest of their music I was hooked.

Green Day - Time of your life.

4 non blondes. Loved 'what's going on' but the rest of album was putrid.

Anyone remember Novo Combo?
There single release from their first LP was "Up Down Periscope" which I hated. Awful, awful song. My brother purchased the album and I came to find the rest of it was really solid. I think they completely fizzled after their second release, but they had some talent... Michael Shrieve and Stephen Dees were talented guys.

Only God Knows Why got a lot of pop radio airplay when it was released as a single. My mom heard it a couple times and wanted me to "buy her that CD". I told her nothing else on the album sounded like that. The thought of my mom buying Devil Without a Cause still brings a smile to my face today.

Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress sounds pretty different from the rest of The Hollies' stuff. You'd think they were a CCR-esque bayou band.

Nada Surf - Popular sounds nothing like their other stuff, which happens to be pretty good

Sugar Ray - the album that "Fly" was on.

Hollies and Nada Surf are good calls.

Grateful Dead. Their records did nothing to prepare you for the live experience.

Disagree. "What's Up" is the kind of song that if you catch yourself singing along to it, you feel bad after. The rest of the album mostly rocked.

I've heard this before but never investigated further. As one of the many that have only heard No Rain, what would you suggest someone dive into to give a better glimpse of their music?

No Rain was written solely by Brad Smith, the bass player. Their other stuff, save Change which was a Shannon offering, was written much more collaboratively.
