Agree. Everything after Waters is boring, bland, and simple. Modest Mouse-everything after Moon and Antarctica.

Genesis was the first band to pop into my head. Brilliant prog rock from the 70s turned into "Sussudio" and "I can't dance" crap.

ETA to include that Starship Built This City bullshite that somehow stemmed out of Airplane.

I don't know about generic, but three of my favorite bands changed enough for me to really not care about them anymore:
The Police
The Cars
REM

Wtf?

The Police only released 5 albums and broke up at the peak of their popularity, following Synchronicity.

That’s the opposite of what the OP is referring to.

Had they stayed together and released some carbon copy Synchronicity-like albums, you would have a point.

REM? Didn’t listen to them after Monster, but they definitely were not generic to that point.

Cars? Heartbeat City was different than their history but still good.

My vote would be Van Halen.

Agreed. They became Air Supply.

Like they were a different band.

You must have missed their sixth album, Door to Door.

Lots of bands have a shitty swan song album.

I took the OP to refer to bands that remained somewhat popular releasing generic album after generic album.

I agree. VH made some good music with Sammy Hagar, but every album after DLR had a bunch of sappy ballads that were a dramatic departure from the hard rock sound that put VH on the map. Except for EVH"s guitar playing, they became indistinguishable from other hard rock/glam metal bands of that era.

I would argue his later work is harder to find.

Well up until now. They rereleased a lot of his albums. But you werent finding his 90s albums anywhere.

Like barometer soup. Which I dig.

But I think a lot of bands end up falling into this generic trap or went through a period of that.

Like a Kiss or Sabbath through lineup changes.

Grew up in the 80s with them a bit. Never a huge fan (and don't know anything about the band or its members), but it was on the radio and was outside noise, at least. Haven't listened to a 70s album, but every time I discover another song from that version, I generally like it and realize even more just how different those two bands were.

No doubt, Bag of Grins, Handful, Carry Me Home. Anyone saying they turned generic is just spouting shite off when they've obviously not heard anything recent that they're referring to.

Five Finger Death Punch

I liked their first album. Everything after that was boring to me.

U2 and Coldplay definitely; Aerosmith survived through multiple music fads and adapted pretty well so that’s a definite no
