The old "sell out" argument. Faulting people for being good and people catching up is always silly. Also, people run out of material. A persons debut album is the best material that they've written in their whole life. After that is a crap shoot.

Aerosmith is a decent pick.

The transition started when Gabriel left and became complete when Steve Hackett left.

That's true but it doesn't always work like that. Pink Floyd became incredibly popular after DSoM but they remained pretty true to themselves after that. They didn't start writing songs specifically to become top 40 hits. In my view they didn't "sell out"; rather fans as you say "caught up" to their message.

Genesis on the other hand did sell out. They abandoned their original vision and tried to sell a lot of records, which they were quite successful at. However that music to me is nearly unlistenable. The 3 guys that remained were incredible musicians. They didn't just suddenly forget how to play. They just chose to play music that appealed to the masses rather than showcase their musical talent.

Kings of Leon and the Avett Bros are the first that come to mind.

Eli Young Band.

First few albums were great. Then you could see that they were writing less and less songs and sounding a lot more Nashville. I'm sure they love getting paid, but they even seem less than enthusiastic when performing new songs.

True.

My post did sound a little pissy.

Do you think they were just a victim of the 80's?

Who made "great" music in the 80's? Metal excluded.

No, I think they made a conscious decision to write popular music and being a group of very smart people, they succeeded at it.

Well, Peter Gabriel for one. But I'll admit even he got a little commercial too at times.
