Definitely one of the "go to" answers to this question.

Jimi Hendrix Experience was unlike anything I'd ever seen (saw them live).
Were you at the BR show?

Velvet Underground

MC5 maybe.
This is from 1967

MC5 played BR at the Speakeasy Club

Sabbath, my friends and I, most of whom who were musicians, never took Sabbath particularly seriously. Thought of them as sort of fun and a goof
But that was before he had a reality show

That's where I saw them. Absolutely wild. Had never seen that type of "angry" rock before. Just wow !!!

The Smiths for one. They came out of nowhere with innovative music during a period of crappy, awful mainstream bluster.

I love the Smiths. But they didn't come out of nowhere. There was a flourishing alternative music scene in Britain and the US. For example, The Cure was already an established band by then.

Growing up in the late 60s early 70s there were so many "who in the hell is this" moments. They were endless actually.

But I remember where I was when I first heard Hendrix, who was there, the song and I literally felt it in my heart.

It was Stone Free.

And I said, who in the hell is that.

True but Morrissey and Marr weren't big fans of groups like New Order. There's a few old interviews on youtube of them talking about this. They set out to create an entirely different sound with meaningful lyrics (according to them). Morrissey was influenced heavily by the writings of Oscar Wilde - Marr says he was influenced by motown and rockabilly (according to some old Marr interviews).

Still can't figure out how they fused this all together to create the sound they did. It was different than anything at that time.

Actually saw Hendrix in Shreveport with Soft Machine opening. Was on the front row and I knew music would never be the same.

Didn't see MC5 there, but, God, I loved the Speakeasy. The economics for banks playing live were so different then.

Well Morrissey is a pretentious frick. And Robert Smith had him beat in the brooding category.

B/c Marr is fricking awesome and he and Billy Duffy were friends that shared a love of all music but each were very particular in their own sound they were trying to create.

Not really. There were tosn of alternative British bands at teh time. I can easily lump them in with Echo & The Bunnymen, Siouxie, The Cure, Psychedelic Furs, Aztec Camera, Tears for Fears, and The The, who ironically Marr ended up with for a few albums.

Johnny Marr was doing what The Edge would later do. Just do it a lot better. And earlier.

Johnny Marr was doing his thing and The Edge was doing his. Not even similar. Johnny probably could do it better but not earlier. U2 had 3 albums out by the time The Smiths were even a thing.

Killing Joke. They're self titled album in 1980, does not sound like something from that era.

I voting for this. I'm a biased fan though.

Sure there were but Morrissey and Marr weren't big fans and definitely didn't want to imitate those groups. Morrissey was super anti-establishment back then and particularly hated the corporate music structure.

Just found another old interview of him talking about how ridiculous he thought the music scene was. LOL. Pretty funny watching Morrissey get worked up over that stuff.

VU is a shining example of this. Their influence is vast. JD is very close behind.

how have we gone three pages and no one has mentioned talking heads? Or television?

I definitely agree on black sabbath and MC5. Suicide is another one I would list.

Spacemen 3 might be another one.
