how have we gone three pages and no one has mentioned talking heads? Or television?

Was wondering the same thing.

And I don't really agree with The Smiths, though I love them. They had a unique sound, but it really wasn't a groundbreaking sound, though it was quite different than the proverbial New Wave genre they get lumped in with. Devo from that era was definitely ahead of their time.

Foster and Lloyd.

Great songwriting, vocals and harmonies, but they were too pop for country, and to country for pop.

That is a great pick. I forgot all about them.

Split Enz

Don't know how many of you remember them. In the US they were mainly a MTV band. They achieved the peak of their popularity in the early 1980's, but check out this from 1976.

Used to play "One Step Ahead of You", from the laser-cut LP on our college radio station.

My go-tos for this are The Pixies and Faith No More.

The Pixies paved the way for grunge -- there's the famous quote from Kurt Cobain about how he should have been in a Pixies tribute band. And Black Francis was obsessed with UFOs and aliens -- his lyrics could probably fill up a couple of seasons of the X-Files. They would have been gigantic if they came along in the late 90s. (I had to use the pun).

Faith No More were doing rap-metal way before Korn, Limp Bizkit, Crazy Town, etc. And they were smart and weird about it -- they weren't a bunch of meat-headed douchebags. They would have been huge in 1999.

And Paul's Boutique was a record way before its time. It kind of sunk like a stone when it was released in 1989. It would have been huge if it came out around the same time Beck was hitting the scene.
