Probably more concerning is that Dave Brubeck isn't on the list.

There is a ton of information about different music here. I've never scrolled through this thread but I will definitely do so.

I also need to study up on what kind of turntable I need. I use Dad's old Bang and Olufsen (their top of the line about 30 years ago). I really would like to get a new system, but there is so much nice stuff out there I'm not sure where to go.

When I'm home, I spend at least an hour each day kicking back in my music room (not including my piano practice time).

LOL

Paul Desmond doesn't get enough credit for that song. Dave Brubeck was probably the king of cool in the 50's.

My grandfather has a ton of jazz on reel to reel. He played a lot of Brubeck and for some reason I remember the reel with Earl Grant "Beyond the Reef." Pops looks like he'd be the last man in the world to listen to jazz.

What model is it? Much of that old equipment is better quality than really expensive equipment is now. If anything just check your stylus and make sure it’s not getting time for it to be replaced. With its age there’s no telling how long it’s been on there. Obviously, how much it’s been used is what really matters though.

Also, those reel to reel tapes are going for crazy money right now.

I have 2 versions of TO already, so it was a tough one but passed.

100% true. Similar to some songs that were performed by Duke Ellington's orchestra but composed by others like Billy Strayhorn (Take the A Train) and Juan Tizol (Caravan).

Today I voted this #1 on a best of 2022 Tone Poet poll.
I pretty much bought this blindly and I’m glad I did, sonically & musically it’s top-notch. So cool. Jazz guys, grab this, trust me…

Gonna trust you on this one. Just purchased it along with Rough and Tumble. Both on sale for around $25, so why not.

Good Lookin' out! Honestly I wish Amazon would just let me subscribe to these and the verve acoustic sounds series at a reasonably discounted monthly rate and just send them to me. I strive to have them all but i have to go back and fill in some gaps. Mostly trying to work thru a backlog of stuff I already have now.

Starting to understand this streaming thing after doing much research.
Yes, I’m a boomer and starting over with a system.

Here’s what I am thinking about getting and could be my last system because of my life style.

Simple and seems to be a very good value

Let me know pros and cons if you can

Acoustic Energy ae1 active speaker system

iFi audio Neo Stream
Streamer/Dac/preamp

Looks like $1300 to $1400 for each piece of equipment

$10 per month for Apple high res music?

Do you only listen to music on LP's? I have a bunch of CD's from my Dad's stuff so I listen about 60% CD and 40% LP. I do like the LP experience much better, but I haven't built up my non-classical LP collection.

I don't stream. I like to own, in some format, the music that I enjoy.

Listened to the album (downloaded digital). Milestones, Emerge and Patterns were my favorites.

I'm not a big fan of slow tempo jazz, though if the musicianship is at a high level, I can appreciate the musicianship.

That brings up a question I'm a little curious about for others in terms of listening habits. Over the last several years I've been streaming, but I still buy at least some records (CDs / LPs) and as noted have a pretty extensive collection. I have all my CDs ripped to a NAS server (along with of course purchased downloads, which are mostly hi-res); but even for recordings I own a copy of, I'll usually stream instead of playing the local copy.

There are 3 main reasons I have for that.

1) The availability of lossless sound quality on Tidal for years.
2) It gives just a bit more compensation to the artist, even if miniscule.
3) I think it gives another admittedly also miniscule, bump to the artist's profile on streaming.
4) Also, convenience for mobile applications. I do have a phone with a large capacity such that I have AAC versions of my entire 40k+ track library, but UX in most cases favors streaming.

Curious what others think of that.

Converting all the LPs to digital in my library sounds like a massive undertaking that isn’t worth the squeeze

If I’m sitting down to really really listen to music critically, then it’s always a record. If I’m running around town or doing something around the house, then I typically just use Amazon music.
