…just a pic of a framed drawing (about 6” square) that a fellow audio buddy gave me—it made it through the storm!

Hilary Hahn "Paris" is a tour de force for her. Her musicianship is awesome and she has a very cute personality. I've met her a few times, and she isn't pompous or conceited (which is sometimes the case for some of the classical artists). She is down-to-earth and funny too.

I purloined the picture off a website that I like.

Sonny Rollins' "Colossus" is a great jazz album. I love the sax (but can't play it). Max Roach on drums and I love Tommy Flanagan's piano work.

This again reminds me that I was born at the wrong time (at least as far as music goes). Most of these jazz greats quit performing before I was old enough to catch them live.

ETA: Your post answered my question.

Sonny is still with us, though he doesn't play any more. He is one of the very LAST of an amazing era of musicians that were creating that music. A giant among giants, and one of the most brilliant improvisers ever. Gonna put on some "Newk" to close my night out!

Edit: my pick...

I have not listened to that album. I'll check it out.

As I said, I love the sax, but have zero sax playing talent. (I even took lessons).

You have a lot of LP's. Do you have a lot of vintage jazz?

I don't actually have a ton of LPs, but I do have a ton of jazz CDs. Somewhere in the realm of 2K for jazz. One way to characterize it... I did a quick check of my Excel list, and there are 33 jazz musicians I have 10 or more titles from. Note, some of those are multi-disk sets so represent more "records". So for example, John Coltrane's "The Heavyweight Champion" collection of all of his Atlantic records is listed as 1 title, but is 6 disks and 9 separate original LPs. I have 48 Coltrane "titles"...

[Edit - I think you were probably referring to BigOrangeBri but replied to my post and I got confused, lol.]

I would be interested in seeing a list of the 33 jazz musicians. Thanks.

If you were trying to respond to me, I have around 200 or so jazz records.

I consider myself a casual jazz lover. A lot of jazz people are over the top fanatical about it. I like to think me and jazz have a more healthy relationship lol

I was VERY fanatical, lol... for about 15 years. I was doing a radio show for about 10 of those, spending a significant part of my disposable income as a single guy on CDs, around 15-20 per month.

Oh man, you definitely tumbled down the rabbit hole. I can see how it could easily be done.

Also very surprised to see Chet Baker absent from the list.

Not a huge singers fan in general, or west coast / cool jazz either, both of which Baker is more known for. Probably more concerning is that Dave Brubeck isn't on the list.

And this list isn't supposed to be necessarily representative of any consensus greats - it's just who I really dug and bought records from.

Thank you for posting your list. It is very informative. I knew most of the names, but there are some I'm not familiar with. I plan on taking a listen.

I hope that "Ellington 55" is one of your Duke Ellington albums. It is really good.

I like almost all types of music. I listen to jazz primarily because of the musicianship. I play the piano almost every day, but really wish I could play guitar or sax.

I view bluegrass the same way.
